Chapter 109: Three Days

Tao Fei’s tone made Zhang Siyi a bit angry. – How can he be so shameless!? Shit, he asked and I’m just supposed to obey?

Thinking of his earlier outburst, Zhang Siyi was reminded of an unruly teenager. He hesitated a moment, then walked a few steps in Tao Fei’s direction: “What?”

Zhang Siyi: “Boss needed me for something so I ate with him. What did you do with my boxed lunch?”

Zhu Hongzhen: “I wanted to tell you about this. I gave it to Tao Fei.”

Surprised, Zhang Siyi asked: “Oh? Why did you give it to him?”

Zhu Hongzhen: “When I went to lunch, I saw him sitting alone in the dining area drinking coffee. He seemed to be in a better mood. Ji Feiyu went over to talk to him for a while and seeing that he didn’t have a lunch and I had an extra one, I gave yours to him.”

Zhu Hongzhen: “I told him you have a very good character. You don’t mind that I gave the Bento away, right?”

Zhu Hongzhen also pointed to the stack of books and materials on Zhang Siyi desk: “By the way, he just came over to repay you for the Bento.”

Fortunately, everything was peaceful in the afternoon. When Gu Yu returned to the company, he met with Tao Fei in his office. They continued to make modifications to his design and by the evening, they adopted a hybrid structure. Gu Yu and Zhang Siyi made arrangements earlier that day to move some of his belongings by car after work. Since Zhang Siyi wanted to spend every second of his day with Gu Yu, he waited for him to finish for the evening. There was another incident when they left the company. Thirty minutes after the workday ended, Gu Yu and Zhang Siyi walked together to the elevator and met Tao Fei.

Having recovered from his outburst, Tao Fei looked relaxed. He smiled at Gu Yu and called him “brother” but when he saw Zhang Siyi in the corner of his eye, he just said “Yo.”

Zhang Siyi: “……” Yo-Yo-Yo yourself! I have a name you know?!

Tao Fei asked Gu Yu: “Brother, is he the little student who came back from the UK undergraduate program that you mentioned to me last time?”

Gu Yu nodded: “Yeah.”

Since Tao Fei didn’t know they were about to leave work together, he asked Zhang Siyi: “Where do you live?”

Thinking of his temper and his actions at noon time, he got goose bumps. Zhang Siyi was feeling overwhelmed by the sudden question so he paused and didn’t know how to answer him. Luckily, Gu Yu answered for him: “He is coming with me today.”

Tao Fei raised his eyebrow and questioned: “To your house? Why?”

Gu Yu explained without hesitation: “He is moving in.”

Tao Fei was surprised: “The last time I asked if I could live there, didn’t you say that your sister was living there?”

Looking away, Gu Yu lightly coughed: “My sister recently found an internship, far away from where I live. She is moving into a house with her classmates. Zhang Siyi was looking for a new place to live, so I offered the room to him.”

Zhang Siyi gave Gu Yu a side-long glance. Gu Yao and her classmate rented a house? Really? How come I don’t know about it? You clearly said something else yesterday. You’re lying to Tao Fei, aren’t you? (乛 W 乛)

Gu Yu: “…”

Tao Fei looked at them suspiciously as if there was something was wrong, but he couldn’t say it. In the end, he only touched his chin with interest: “Siyi, Auntie Four. Really appropriate. Hehe.”

When the elevator returned to the ground floor, they exited the building and Tao Fei headed in the opposite direction towards the subway. Since there was no time later to cook, Gu Yu took Zhang Siyi out for dinner

The climate in early spring is still relatively humid and cold and frequently rains. As they left the office, it started to drizzle.

Zhang Siyi wasn’t in the habit of bringing an umbrella with him. Since both his company and his apartment were rather close to the subway stop, he never felt it necessary to carry one and instead used the hood on his coat. But not today. Since Gu Yu was taking him out for dinner at a ramen restaurant, with the rain and wind, a thousand meters was too far without an umbrella.

From Gu Yu’s briefcase, he took out a folded black umbrella and snapped it open. He called him: “Come here.”

Zhang Siyi nervously went over. With two men under a single umbrella, Zhang Siyi was subconsciously pulling away to give Gu Yu more room under the canopy so he wouldn’t get wet. In a short while, Zhang Siyi felt Gu Yu’s hand slowly slipped from his shoulder and then it would be placed on Zhang Siyi’s shoulder once again. After it occurred a couple of times, Gu Yu moved his arm more comfortably around Zhang Siyi’s lower back instead. Zhang Siyi was nervous and could feel his heart pounding like crazy.

As they walked down the street, Gu Yu lowered the umbrella against the wind. Like themselves, the people around them were also leaving work and hurrying to get out of the rain. No one payed any attention to who were the ones so closely huddled together under the umbrella. In this way, the two men went all the way to the Ramen place. When they arrived, Gu Yu let him go.

Zhang Siyi turned his back and hid while clutching his chest and panting… (o////o)

After dinner, the rain was getting heavier so they decided to take a taxi to Gu Yu’s home instead of using the subway. It took an hour for the two of them to drive to Zhang Siyi’s apartment and then pack the car full of boxes and then drive back to Gu Yu’s place.

Working together, it didn’t take long to unpack Gu Yu’s car. Zhang Siyi placed most of the boxes near the front entrance in the foyer. Wiping his hands, Gu Yu was getting ready to make one more trip back and forth. While he went to drop Zhang Siyi off at home, he was going to bring back a bunch of miscellaneous items. As they sat in the car waiting for the traffic light to change, Gu Yu suddenly asked: “I have enough blankets. Do you want to pick up your toiletries and the dog and move in earlier than planned?”

Gu Yu’s proposal made Zhang Siyi’s heart move. He couldn’t wait to move in, but he still needed to practice playing the violin. He wanted to utilize the time he had left to practice rigorously because he wanted to play Summer for Gu Yu perfectly. If he moved in early, then Gu Yu would hear him practice and thereby ruining the surprise.

“Not right now.” Zhang Siyi said with great difficulty. “It’s just a few more days until I’ll officially move on Saturday.”

Gu Yu seemed a little surprised by Zhang Si Yi’s answer and glanced at him thoughtfully.

Zhang Siyi was afraid of disappointing him so he hurriedly explained: “I still have a few things I need to do at home.”

Gu Yu nodded and said: “Okay. If you say so.”

Reluctantly, Zhang Siyi watched Gu Yu drive away then he went back inside his apartment and quickly washed up. Counting down the next three days, he was determined to make us of his time and poured everything he had into practicing the violin.

Chapter 108: Fried Hair

When everyone turned back to their desks and were no longer paying attention, Zhang Siyi quietly got up and went to pick up the torn pieces from the trash can. Since Tao Fei only tore it two times, the drawings were easily taped back together.

…… Ah, like layers of rice cakes…  It’s really beautiful!

Zhang Siyi looked over the plans in detail. Not only was the outside shape of the building unique, the inside structure was well developed and intricate as well.

Now that Zhang Siyi has been working at Borderless for over six months, from the early stages of parking lots and core drafting, to medium and large office buildings, to his completion of a set of blueprints, he is no longer a rookie who can’t understand anything.

If Tao Fei design use a person as an analogy, then the shape of the building is like the overall appearance of someone. The structure is like the building’s skeleton and the outer layers are its clothing.

No matter which part is designed first, the first problem to overcome is engineering the support structure that houses the column network and core functions. In traditional buildings, the core function tube, like a person’s backbone, is most important part of the support structure. However, in Tao Fei design, the structural columns are on an incline and thereby giving less structural importance to the core function tube.

It was clear that Tao Fei spent a lot of thought on the design of his very unique building. Although Zhang Siyi didn’t evaluate the drawings in detail, just by looking at them, he can tell how knowledgeable and capable Tao Fei really was. His confidence isn’t unwarranted.

On one hand, sometimes when people of similar abilities work in the same group, the unfounded differences in treatment between them may trigger hatred and jealousy. On the other hand, when one of the persons is clearly ahead of the other, then the innate competition between the two will disappear.

The same is true for Zhang Siyi. When he saw Tao Fei’s design, he knew he was leagues ahead of his own ability. He had fought an imaginary enemy and regretted how hostile and foolish he was. It was as Gu Yu said, even if Tao Fei is arrogant, he is a very good designer.

Not anticipating any issues, the proud Tao Fei encountered the Big Devil named Gu Yu and the most vital part of the building was already rejected. As always, Gu Yu was direct in his evaluation and definitely did not in any way pamper Tao Fei even if they were classmates.

Shit! If Zhang Siyi was in Tao Fei shoes, he probably would have exploded too.  (=_=)

As the design director, so far, no one at Borderless has argued with Gu Yu. Even if the people in Child Labor Group B have design differences, both are respectful and polite. While sounding harsh, Gu Yu criticisms were always valid and spoken with good reason. If a subordinate banged your desk and then slammed your office door, then it definitely will be awkward and uncomfortable between the two.

Although feels Zhang Siyi is a little sympathetic for Tao Fei, at the moment, he was more worried about Gu Yu. It’s only natural because he likes Gu Yu! ~\(≧▽≦) /~

He opened the company internal message system and selecting Gu Yu’s name then Zhang Siyi sent him a short note: “I just heard your quarrel with Tao Fei. Are you all right?”

Gu Yu: “I’m fine. Leave him be. Tao Fei will come back when he cools down.”

After Tao Fei’s blow up, whispers could be heard in the office. People were speculating on Tao Fei’s job security in the company. Some people even made bets as to whether or not he will last through the day.

Zhang Siyi had mixed feelings towards the incident. At first, he really didn’t want Tao Fei in the company. Now that he heard his colleagues say the same, he felt bad. If their team lost Tao Fei, they would be losing a talented designer.

Not intending to think about it further, Zhang Siyi slowly shook his head and sighed. He was about to get up for lunch, when suddenly, Gu Yu called out to him: “Zhang Siyi, come here.”

Zhang Siyi got up quickly and went over to him: “Yes? Is there a problem?”

Gu Yu: “Let’s go out together at noon for lunch. I have something to tell you.”

Zhang Siyi: “……” Uh, but he already has ordered the company’s Bento!

Gu Yu silently watched him for a few seconds. Zhang Siyi lifted the white flag and surrendered: “OK.”

Since Zhang Siyi ordered a boxed lunch, he gave it his neighbor, Piggy.

He took the elevator downstairs with Gu Yu and this time they went to a Cantonese restaurant and ordered the business lunch package. Even though Zhang Siyi didn’t realize it until now, Gu Yu was posting social media posts with specific privacy settings so that only Zhang Siyi could read them. In all of this time, Gu Yu’s note, ‘empty’ was an invitation for Zhang Siyi to live with him and not because of sympathy or pity.

In a daze, Zhang Siyi felt like he was floating on fluffy pale clouds, surrounded by golden sunshine with countless love bubbles rising up into the air.

Looking back, Zhang Siyi finally understand Gu Yu’s reactions last year during Truth or Dare. He chose Dare both times when Zhang Siyi asked him who he liked and when he asked Gu Yu to evaluate himself.

– Heh, Heh, Heh, Heh…. Oh my. Gu Yu you’re so shy! (&////&)

– Ah, I am really a fool! I’ve had my doubts for so long. Why wasn’t I more confident at the beginning? But then again, why does Gu Yu like me?

“Aaaaaaaaaaah!” The thought of Gu Yu seeing him looking like a mess made Zhang Siyi collapse and hold his head feeling regret. Not only did he see Zhang Siyi’s disheveled appearance, Gu Yu also witnessed Zhang Siyi crying, snot nose and all; it’s too embarrassing!

Not being able to endure his own scruffy appearance any longer, Zhang Siyi turned on the hot water and quickly washed. After drying off, he smacked his cheeks and used facial cleanser and toner. After talking about her brother and then having silence, Gu Yao was afraid something was wrong. She thought, maybe the reality was too much for Zhang Siyi to comprehend and now he doesn’t want anything to do with them?

To appease his future sister-in-law, Zhang Siyi sent her a red envelope to express his gratitude. Still, Zhang Siyi didn’t intend to tell her about his feelings for her brother just yet.

Even though the red envelope was stingy in Gu Yao opinion, she couldn’t help herself from smiling happily at the turn of events.

After they exchanged a ‘good night’, Zhang Siyi put his phone away and leaned back into his pillow thinking about Gu Yu.

People who experience being able to express their adoration and admiration towards the person they love is the happiest feeling in the whole world! Zhang Siyi again got up from the bed and fetched his violin.

A realization hit Zhang Siyi. Gu Yu had already liked him when he asked Zhang Siyi to play the violin for him.

He lifted his violin up onto his shoulder and gently put presser on the chinrest with his jaw. Holding his bow loosely, he started warming up with long legato strokes. Early the next morning, Zhang Siyi woke up full of energy. With the fastest speed possible, he brushed his teeth, washed his face, and dressed. With a bounce in his step, he walked to the subway station and rode it to work. During the morning, rush hour, Zhang Siyi did not mind the packed train cars due to his euphoric feelings. What jam packed cars of smelly people? They are all warm and cute!

Breathing deeply, thinking about being outside in fresh air, Zhang Siyi, practically skipped along cheerfully on the sidewalk to the company building. When he got off the elevator, a passing female colleague waved briefly and yawed. On the other hand, Zhang Siyi energetically greeted the staff on the floor. With much theatrics, Zhang Siyi boisterously told everyone: “Gooooooooood Morning!!!”

Upon hearing Zhang Siyi greeting, one of the staff members spilled their coffee and another left their mouth wide open in shock.

Arriving before him, Zhu Hongzhen watched Zhang Siyi morning greeting. His attitude of ‘I Love Work!’ was a stark contrast to the condition Zhang Siyi was in when he left. Zhu Hongzhen was surprised: “You… What happened yesterday?”

While giving him a casual excuse, Zhang Siyi line of sight was frequently looking at the company’s entrance. It’s 8:55. Why isn’t Gu Yu here yet?! He did say, “See you tomorrow,” so why didn’t he come early?!

Zhu Hongzheng shook his head in wonder. What problem is so simple that one can swing from the look of death to recover in one day and be so joyful the next?

At the appearance of Gu Yu at 8:58, Zhang Siyi’s eyes shined brightly and honed in on Gu Yu’s figure. Their eyes met and as Gu Yu walked calmly to his office, Zhang Siyi bowed his head. However, Zhang Siyi kept peeking at him out of the corner of his eyes.

Gu Yu’s gaze went straight to Zhang Siyi when he entered and he easily saw his antics. Every time he took a peek, their eyes met causing a feeling of an electric current running through him from head to toe.

Zhang Siyi couldn’t take it any longer so he bravely looked up and openly stared at Gu Yu walking to his office. As Zhang Siyi watched, his eyes sparkled, and he could feel the heat within him rise. The current connecting them became stronger and stronger. It made Zhang Siyi feel like his feelings where floating up and out of him, like love bubbles escaping at the top of his head and expressing his love as they burst.

Gu Yu: “……”

This time, Gu Yu looked away first. He raised his fist to cover his mouth and coughed lightly. With a twinkle in Gu Yu’s eyes, he walked slowly passed Zhang Siyi and into his office.

Feeling like he just won a boxing round, Zhang Siyi held up his arms in victory and spun around in his chair smiling from ear to ear. He only saw him briefly and already, Zhang Siyi just wanted to pounce on Gu Yu.

After a little while, Gu Yu sent Zhang Siyi a message to come to his office.

Like a Pokémon summoned beast, it took only three seconds to appear in front of Gu Yu: “Boss, you summoned me!” (⊙v⊙)

Gu Yu: “……”

Sitting at attention in front of Gu Yu, Zhang Siyi blinked his eyes repeatedly, eagerly waiting for his mission.

Again, Gu Yu brought his fist up and coughed lightly then handed him a paper: “This is a tourist development zone in X City, Yunnan province. It is a hotel design project with both designs needed for the buildings as well as a separate landscape landmark. First familiarize yourself with the project background and situation then begin basic preliminary work. After two days, when Tao Fei submits his commercial high-rise building project, I’ll assign the both of you on the project.”

Even though Gu Yu explained his relationship with Tao Fei, when Zhang Siyi heard his name, he couldn’t help but feel a little upset. Since Tao Fei was recruited to help him, Zhang Siyi felts he needed to set aside his negative feelings and try to work together.

Even though Zhang Siyi had all of the nessicary information in hand, Gu Yu saw him continuing to sit at attention staring at him greedily: “Well, was there anything else?”

Zhang Siyi: “No. Boss.” – Aren’t I obvious? Can’t you see that I like you!

Walking out of Gu Yu’s office, Zhang Siyi was feeling a little down, but he was keen on starting the new assignment.

The location of the new project is close to the Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Preliminary research into the area suggests it’s near a car manufacturer. As he was looking online for more information, Zhang Siyi saw Tao Fei go confidently into Gu Yu office with a large stack of color printed papers.

Zhang Siyi was subconsciously trying to listen to them in the office. After a few minutes, the loud dispute could be heard by anyone that was nearby.

Tao Fei: “Ordinary beam and column structures are not enough on such stacking floors.”

Gu Yu: “Don’t expect too much out of the domestic construction technology. Your plan is theoretically feasible, but the actual construction of it is more difficult.”

Tao Fei: “You are too conservative! All new things need to be tried!”

Gu Yu: “But your plan has exceeded the scope of Party A’s willingness to take risks.”

Tao Fei: “You didn’t let Party A see it, so how do you know?”

Gu Yu: “Experience. Also, the outer material for the lattice structure here will be too heavy causing stress on the joints on this side ….”

After hearing a bang, like the sound of the tabletop being hit, Tao Fei angrily clutched his drawings and pushed the door of Gu Yu’s office open.

All the nearby staff have looked up to see what all the fuss is about. Seeing Tao Fei looking so furious for the first time, they were shocked. He angrily crumpled and tore his stack of drawings and trashed them then walked over to his desk to sat down. Not a minute later, he stood up suddenly, and in a hurry as if to avoid being stared at, he walked in the direction of the dining area.

Everyone was a little frightened of Tao Fei’s explosive behavior. Zhang Siyi was as well however, unlike the rest of his colleagues, he has to learn how to get along with him.
