Chapter 12: Help

When Zhang Siyi arrived at home, he heard the rhythmic music blasting in the living room before he entered the door. Upon entering, the delicious aroma of tomato beef sauce assaulted his senses.

Zhang Siyi stepped on the back of his shoes to quickly take them off. His looked around for the source of the fragrance: “Aha! You are cooking!”

“Why are you back so early?” When he heard the door, Fu Xinhui turned his head to see who it was. He was standing in the kitchen wearing an old, faded blue, plaid apron that looked like it was from a different era, with chopsticks in his hand and dipping them into the sauce to taste it. At first glance, his tall figure looked particularly funny, but the whole scene before him seemed so comfortable, he wanted to shout, “I’m home!”.

Zhang Siyi put on his slippers and went over to look what Fu Xinhui was cooking: ” Wow, homemade pasta? Did you make me some?”

Fu Xinhui took the plate and turned to hide: “No touching. I thought you were working late!”

Zhang Siyi followed and turned, “Don’t be so mean, let me eat too. You haven’t put the pasta in yet. Just add some more to the pot.”

Like a master with a dog on his heels, Fu Xinhui moved around trying to avoid Zhang Siyi with the pot in his hand. In the end, he gave up and made more. At this moment, Jiang Hai came back. Seeing Fu Xinhui’s cooking, he reacted the same as Zhang Siyi and asked for his share.

“Fuck you. It’s my food! Even if I’m at home, I’m not your babysitter!” Fu Xinhui, complained.

Zhang Siyi slurped up a mouthful of the red sauce.: “So good! You don’t have to look for work, just stay home and cook for us.”

Jiang Hai chimed in: “Your cooking is terrific. Stay home while we make the money to support you!”

Fu Xinhui laughed: “Fuck off! Both of your salaries combined isn’t even comparable to my pocket money!”

They all laughed together then sat down to eat. Lately, the trio rarely had time for a common meal. Jiang Hai went downstairs to the restaurant to pick up some additional seafood for them to eat.

Fu Xinhui had gone to the supermarket in the afternoon to buy ingredients for his dinner. Besides the Pasta and sauce, he also bought a few side dishes and drinks. As they gathered around the table to chat and eat, He placed the dishes in the middle of the table,.

“Why do you suddenly want to cook? “Asked Jiang Hai.

Fu Xinhui replied: “I’m tired of takeout and It’s nice to have a change”

While studying abroad they were exposed to a variety of different cuisine flavors. In order experience those flavors again, they thought they would have to cook it themselves when they returned. To their surprised, when they return home, they found out that the domestic restaurant industry was much more developed then initially thought and thus, they took the lazy way out and ordered takeout on a regular basis.

Zhang Siyi collapsed on the sofa and burped, touching his belly and said: “I used to think convenience store food was pretty good, but now, this dinner has reminded me of how inadequate they are. I won’t be able to use the microwave anymore.”

Fu Xinhui changed the subject and asked Zhang Siyi: “how was work today?”

“Exhausting. I was so busy all day.” Although busy and tired, Zhang Siyi felt very fulfilled. When he thought about all the work he sorted through today, he was full of accomplishment.

Zhang Siyi spoke of his three hours of work in the morning. Jiang Hai listened and commented: “It seems that your boss is quite good. The head of the design department I work for is unreliable. Training and practical experience wasn’t emphasized at all.”

Zhang Siyi was curious: “What does your real estate company usually do?”

In the industry, the real estate company was commonly known as “Party A” where Jiang Hai is located: “The real estate company buys land everywhere. For example, if the government has a commercial property, the company buys it and then asks different design departments to bid for the contract according to the rules. To put it bluntly, we are the ones who choose which departments can develop the property. The people calling the shots also have a professional background. Then whoever has the highest score will be chosen to use the design but if the people in the design department of Party A are not reliable, even with superb designs, they won’t win the contract and will lose money.”

Fu Xinhui, who was listening on the side, laughed ha-ha, and said to Jiang Hai: “Doesn’t that mean Zhang Siyi is there for you to abuse?”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

Jiang Hai: “You can say this as a joke, but under normal circumstances, we are also very reliable.

After all, no one wants to lose out repeatedly. Its very labor intensive and costly. When small companies can’t figure out the problem, then the big designs companies are contacted. At that time, I can’t say who abuses who.”

After talking with his roommates for an hour, Zhang Siyi returned to his room. It was almost nine o’clock.

He reached for the drawings he brought back with him from work along with the “Architect’s Handbook” given to him by Zhu Hongzhen. Just after two pages his mind was not with the task.

It’s so hard. It’s so boring. I don’t want to draw.……

Stomach full of food and drink, Zhang Siyi was feeling lethargic at the moment. Although he was thinking about finishing his homework, he couldn’t muster up the strength to do it.

He suddenly thought about the message he sent to his friends this morning. Wanting to check the comments his friends wrote; he got his phone out. There were more than 30 postings and one private message from his mother asking about the details of his job.

Mom: “Son, did you find a job?”

Zhang Siyi smiled and typed back: “Yes, mom, I am going to work now!”

One by one, he answered all of his messages. Carefully, he scanned through all the messages again, hoping he would find something from his ex-girlfriend. Zhang Siyi was expecting her to respond to his post when she heard about his new job.

After thinking about it, he couldn’t stop himself from telling her, so he typed out a message and hit send. What wasn’t expected, was the screen that popped up: “XXX. You are not friends. Please send a friend verification request first…”

Fuck! She already deleted me? Not even a chance to be a friend?

Zhang Siyi was so angry that he immediately deleted her information and decided not to have any contacts with his ex-girlfriend. Not long ago, when he returned to China, he saved his living expenses to buy a Fendi bag for her. Thinking about it made him feel embarressed.

Shortly after dealing with his ex-girlfriend, his mother returned his message: “My son is awesome! How much is your salary? What department do you work in?”

Zhang Siyi didn’t like dealing with his father, but his relationship with his mother was very good. He told his mother the details of the company and the current situation.

He was excited to report to his mom about his job but he mother made him feel wronged when he reported his initial salary: “The starting salary is only four thousand and five. [Cry]”

His mother offered some additional funds as congratulations on finding a job. If it’s not enough Mom will go to the bank tomorrow.”

Zhang Siyi received the gift money electronicly, but righteously refused: “I told Dad that I would work and make money on my own. If you give me money without dad knowing, he will get mad at me.”

Mom: “My son grew up and I’m very happy, but mom is also distressed that you don’t have enough money to spend. Rest assured, I’m talking with you secretly so your father won’t know. I’ll send you some money and you can pay me back later.”

Having the support of his mom made Zhang Siyi feel really happy. He sent a few hugs and kisses to his mother and smiled. He continued looking at his phone to read the messages about his friends and classmates. In the blink of an eye, it was already eleven o’clock.

Zhang Siyi yawned and looked at the drawings, but he could not see it. Because of his mother’s support, he didn’t feel as pressured to work on the assignment. It was easy to make excuses. It’s not due until tomorrow night, so go to sleep today.……

However, he didn’t expect his house of cards to fall so suddenly. The next day Zhang Siyi woke up and saw the three messages his mother had sent him early in the morning-

Mom: “Dad is very happy about your new job.”

Mom: “But your father saw the money I sent you. He seriously warned me. I can’t give you any money, otherwise he will confiscate my bank card.”

Mom: “I’m sorry, but you have to take care of it yourself. I’ll be happy to come to Haicheng and visit you instead.”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

These three messages once again ignited Zhang Siyi’s determination. “I will make a lot of money, just wait and see. Then my family will have nothing to complain about.” Zhang Siyi comforted his mother with a few words then bounced up from the bed to quickly brush his teeth.

Thinking about work, he took out the drawings and began to concentrate on the assignment. Zhu Hongzhen’s reference book was very good. Zhang Siyi found a lot of useful data inside to help him with the size of the plans.

However, Gu Yu’s set of pictures was very abnormal. The strange sized spaces on the plans were giving Zhang Siyi a hard time. It was difficult to determine the appropriate functionality of the plan. Some spaces were so narrow, you couldn’t even put a sink and toilet! People were crazy wanting to live there!

Without any constraints, at the office, Zhang Siyi patience was thinning. The inability to use software was adding to his agitation. Previously, he was eage to address the assignment, but now, in this early morning, he felt like his soul was sucked dry.

After lunch, Gu Yu also came over to check on him. He turned over the two pathetic drawings on his desk and while he said nothing, he gave a long: “hmm…”

Noticing Gu Yu’s reaction, Zhang Siyi felt the pressure of the assignment loom before him. As a result, he felt even more suffocated.

At four o’clock in the afternoon, Zhang Siyi only completed three pictures. He realized it would be impossible to get all of his drawings done before leaving work this evening. Gu Yu fucking dug a huge pit for him!

Zhang Siyi let his negative feelings from yesterday overwhelmed him. He regretted all of the time he took chatting online and ignoring his responsibilities. What’s done is done. Since his deadline was fast approaching, he could only admit defeat and seek advice from the director. Yes, Zhang Siyi remembers the sentence that Gu Yu said on the day of the interview — if you don’t understand, ask, don’t make your own assumptions.

He took a deep breath and messaged the director. “Do you have a minute, I need help with one of the plans.”

Gu Yu: “There is only one?”

Zhang Siyi stared at his response. Why did it seem like Gu Yu was laughing at him? Shameless!

Gu Yu: “Bring it all over.”

Zhang Siyi stuffed the picture and design manual under his arm and pushed the door open to Gu Yu’s office. When he sat down, he rushed to explain himself: “you can see on this picture there is only this place for the bathroom, but I checked the data in the manual and the minimum size door for a bathroom without a bath is 900*2100, or 1100*1800. It can’t be placed here. Not 100 in the horizontal direction, or 200 in the vertical direction; there is a door in the way…”

The more Zhang Siyi explained his difficulties, the angrier he got. It made him feel like his design talents were completely worthless. Clearly, Gu Yu gave him this assignment knowing he would have problems!

Gu Yu smiled and laughed at him and flipped through the manual in a pretentious manner. He gently spoke: “This is indeed the smallest size drawn in this booklet, but have you ever thought about a more extreme possibility?”

As he explained, Gu Yu took a pencil from the pen holder: “The reason why the ‘standard chart’ drawn in the book is called ‘standard’ is because it’s based on normal conditions, but what happens when the conditions are abnormal?”

Dumbfounded, Zhang Siyi said “oh.”

Under normal circumstances, only one toilet is placed the long way. Then the most suitable net width is 900.” Gu Yu took a pencil and steadily drew a few lines on the drawing. He drew a one-way door, and marked the size then looked at Zhang Siyi and asked, “Can’t that 800 be used?”

Zhang Siyi’s stared blankly at Gu Yu while inwardly, he thought: you’re fucking with me.

Gu Yu said: “The set of pictures that Du Rui gave you Included bathroom doors’ under normal circumstances. They are all 700 only because of that standard, but on this drawing, can’t 650 and 600 be used?”

Zhang Siyi was completely stupid.

Gu Yu looked at him and said seriously: “Do you know the biggest difference between the drafter and the designer? The draftsman is only rigidly making plans according to the norms and the standardized drawings summarized by others. Designers think and fix. Don’t forget, you are a designer: you have to question the rules and common sense.”

Last time he sat here, Gu Yu wanted him to use the standards to design bathrooms. Not less than forty-eight hours later, Gu Yu reversed the theory to make Zhang Siyi question the rules.

At the moment, Zhang Siyi just want to loudly yell. Fuck! why does it have to be so complicated?

Chapter 11: Homework

When asked, Zhang Siyi was also a little overwhelmed. What are his thoughts and ideas? His mind was a mess from the meeting with Gu Yu just now.

Even so, he knew Du Rui was feeling distraught so he took the opportunity to ease the tension between them and offered a generic reason: “I first made a list, categorizing the functions of the space, like eating, sleeping, and bath… then, I imagined myself living in the apartment and asked myself how I would want the flow of space to be like. For example, I want to see the entrance of the living area, but don’t want to see the small bedroom right away so I put it to the right side and attached it to the balcony.”

He glanced at the Du Rui drawings. Because she draws them in color with such precision, he didn’t look at the details. They were so beautifying to look at, it was easy to overlook its faults.

Until Gu Yu pointed them out, Zhang Siyi discovered the many problems of her plans.

He continued: “Although the internal planning of the district has been done, the environment can’t be ignored, so we have to investigate the site map before making a design decision. See here, the land to the southwest will be green space so If we put the living room or balcony in this direction, there will be a very good view of the landscape. But in your design, you ignored the potential view, and placed the balcony where there is a low building. Even though the building will be demolished to solve the problem of low light, wouldn’t the nice view be better overall?”

As Zhang Siyi explained, he watched Du Rui’s expressions. He could see her in rapt attention and listening closely to his words. Her features slowly softened and she relaxed. He went on to voice his thoughts and teach her without reservation.

Without realizing it, the two of them spent half an hour discussing ideas . Du Rui listened for a long time and said with sincerity: “It’s no wonder Director Gu recruited you. You are really amazing.”

After listening to this praise, Zhang Siyi was a bit flattered. He scratched his head and said: “I don’t know if my thoughts are right, but it is the method my design teacher taught.”

The two inquired about their respective universities, and Du Rui graduated from the architecture department of a general university in China.

She smiled bitterly: “I too have learned design theory, but we rarely put it to practice. Mostly, the drawing itself was only analyzed without much input about its function. At the time, our design school had a strange ethos. The one with the most praise was the design with the most visual appeal. The beautiful, dazzling picture got the highest remarks. When I began working In Boundless, it was very confusing and I became distraught because I’ve made the plans like I was taught, but the director would always criticism me. I didn’t understand what type of mistakes I was making. After listening to you today, I feel a little bit… Well, the design process is really complicated.”

Zhang Siyi was startled at Du Rui words. In fact, he doesn’t find it hard at all.

When Zhang Siyi was studying, starting from the initial site analysis, to environmental analysis and to the core functionality, each student worked on their projects for a long time. After looking at all of the details together, little by little the plan would evolve. It seemed so useless at the time. Students often repeated the research until the last week the project was due to suddenly reimagine the design and start over.

Perhaps Zhang Siyi himself did not realize, he was being nurtured from the beginning to form a way of thinking and not just to learn the task of drawing for the sake of drawing.

Even with Du Rui praise, Zhang Siyi was not proud. After all, he has heard the same thing many times at school. There was this one professor who was very good at encouraging students. Zhang Siyi often heard him say, “You are great”, “You are very talented”. At first, Zhang Siyi heart really swelled, until later he learned that the design teacher said the same thing to every student. (=_=)

With his diminishing job opportunities when he returned home, Zhang Siyi could only hear the echo of his professors’ words, making him feel foolish. What talent? Zhang Siyi is not afraid of talented people. He is afraid of hardworking people.

He recalls as a freshman, there was a Lithuanian classmate who was not very good. The first homework assignment was to measure a telephone booth. At that time, the other party could not even draw a straight line. When the project critique came, many people laughed at it. Zhang Siyi saw him working really hard, always reading and practicing every time he went to class. In his second year, the teacher publicly praised his design skill as it reached the middle level of the whole department. In the eyes of the top students, he was still a talentless nobody. They weren’t afraid of the competition until the end, when the student graduated with the top grade in the department and went to a famous London firm for an internship. The firm’s recruitment conditions were extremely demanding, so the results of the admission made all the students stunned.

Thinking about it after the fact, everyone can agree that he worked really hard. By the time you acknowledge his skills, the difference will be too great, and you won’t be able to catch up.

Now, Zhang Siyi also saw a similar determination in Du Rui’s eyes. Even with her setbacks, she hasn’t given up. She can only have the courage to meet the difficulties, persevere and move forward.

Her attitude made Zhang Siyi really respect her. He tried to comfort Du Rui and said: “Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. You see your ability to plan is lacking, but your hand drawing is superb. Although the functionality of my design is more complete, it’s more blurred. Your drawing is so detailed you can see each room on your drawings!” Zhang Siyi squinted, Unbelievable, “How did you do this in such a short time?”

Du Rui smiled and said: “There is also a method I use. I have collected a set of room templates. There are bathrooms, bedrooms and living rooms of various sizes. When I want to use them, I can copy them from inside, oh.”

Zhang Siyi mouth twitched. Is this not similar to a puzzle?

Du Rui squeezed her eyebrows and said: “Since you have taught so many ideas with me, I will share it with you. Do you want to try useing it?”

Zhang Siyi was overjoyed: “yes I want the bathroom!” His loud, boisterous remarks could be heard by everyone. The burden he felt had been lifted.

Du Rui: “…”

With the help of Du Rui’s private “divine map”, Zhang Siyi’s toilet drawing went much faster. It took less than the time it did to refine the two sets of plans. He wanted to go to the director now, so Zhang Siyi sent a message to Du Rui.

Zhang Siyi: “Um, do you want to go and hand it in now? Even though Gu Yu hasn’t asked for us yet….” He wanted a moment to relax.

Du Rui said: “Of course! There might be a couple of revisions to reconsider. If we don’t find out early enough, we will have to work overtime in order to make all the corrections.”

Zhang Siyi: “…ah, ok.”

The two of them went to print the drawings and find Gu Yu. Since this time Du Rui was with him, Zhang Siyi had more confidence in his heart.

However, after examining the drawings, Gu Yu only looked at Zhang Siyi in the eyes, making Zhang Siyi feel nervous again – did he do something wrong?

“You drew this? “Asked Gu Yu, looking at him with a sharp look.

Zhang Siyi: “Yes.” Applying templates is also considered drawing his own, right?

Gu Yu also looked at Du Rui and Zhang Siyi clearly felt that Du Rui was also a bit nervous.

“You didn’t help him?” Gu Yu asked Du Rui.

Du Rui was silent for a moment, red faced: “I showed him the reference templates.”

Gu Yu nodded and said: “Okay, you may leave first. Send me the completed plans later by email.”

Du Rui hesitantly asked: “Anything else?””

Gu Yu: “No. Go back to your desk and finish up the work yourself. You may leave work on time.”

Du Rui left first, leaving Zhang Siyi to wait for the next order.

Gu Yu turned over a stack of blank plans in a folder and handed them to him: “Go back and refine the internal plan of these figures.”

Zhang Siyi saw that these pictures were comprised of very small offices like tea rooms and apartment types. The key point is that the shapes of these plans are irregular, which means that he can’t apply any of the templates!

Sweating, he asked nervously, “What kind of project is this?” He got the feeling that his use of a short-cut has totally been seen through.

Gu Yu: “Not a project, it is homework. Give it to me before I leave work tomorrow night.”

Zhang Siyi: “……” What is this? Gu Yu found him this morning talking with his friends, so he arranged an assignment to keep him occupied all day and night? He’s not giving him a chance to breathe at all!

Gu Yu added: “By the way, these diagrams do not have an electronic version, remember to do them by hand.”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

Seeing that Zhang Siyi came back deflated, Zhu Hongzhen was curious: “What’s the matter?”

Zhang Siyi dumped the drawings on the table, angry and said: “Ah, I’m so annoyed. Not only do I have to redo these, but I have to do them by hand!”

Zhu Hongzhen took a look at his desk: “eh, what is it? Oh, the small floor plan.……” Somehow, the entire group of his colleagues suddenly turned to gaze at Zhang Siyi with sympathy.

Bi Lele called out: “Fourth Aunt, go see the notice in the group.”

Zhang Siyi looked at the flashing icon in the lower right corner and saw that Gu Yu had just sent a new message ten seconds ago – “Zhang Siyi is currently in the floor plan training period, please don’t tell him any drawing shortcuts.”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

Zhu Hongzhen initially wanted to give Zhang Siyi some advice but refrained. This the first time the boss made such a remark in the group. “He really is ‘’attached’ to you.”

Zhang Siyi’s heart collapsed. I’m not a masochist, I don’t want this ‘attention’ Ah!

Feeling guilty, Du Rui sent a message: “I’m sorry! I feels like this was my fault.”>_>;”

As much as it would be nice to put blame on something else, Zhang Siyi knew it wasn’t her fault. “No, don’t worry about it.”

On the bright side, Gu Yu assignment ignited Zhang Siyi’s ambition. For the remaining forty minutes, Zhang Siyi took a lot of effort to draw on the parchment paper and did not lift his head.

Being focused on his work, Zhang Siyi did not hear Gu Yu’s approach. His voice rang behind him: “Do you want to work overtime?”

Zhang Siyi turned his head and saw Gu Yu seemingly in a good mood, look straight at him with a smile.

He was so angry that he wanted to strangle him. He gathered his stack of drawings up in an abrupt manner, saying, ” no.” It’s not due till tomorrow after work.

“Oh, very confident. Then I’ll wait for your results tomorrow night.”

Zhang Siyi: “……” Shit, I feel like I’m being bullied again!

Seeing Zhang Siyi frazzled appearance, Zhu Hongzhen pulled out a shabby pocket “architect’s Handbook” from his desk and handed it to him: “Here, there are some basic parameters that may be useful to you. Bring it home with you and take a look.”

Zhang Siyi grateful: “Piggy!” Thank you!”

Zhu Hongzhen shrugged: “I can only help you a little in this way.”

Chapter 10: Efficiency

Bi Lele explained: “The little cactus ball grew from the root of big one. It was later transplanted into a new pot, so the boss has been taking care of two plants since it was the product of the original one.”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

“And that’s not all….” Bi Lele craned her neck looking at the direction of the director’s office and then lowered her head, looked at Zhang Siyi, she lowered her voice and continued to explain: “About two months ago at the end of May there was an intern working with our group from T University.”

“Oh?” Zhang Siyi leaned in closer, eager to listen to the gossip with rapt attention.

Bi Lele pointed to Zhang Siyi’s desk, saying: “Like her, you both were assigned to the same desk and asked take care of the cactus.”

“Wait a minute,” Zhang Siyi interrupted. “Let me make it clear. I didn’t ask for the cactus. The boss gave it to me by his own accord.”

Bi Lele.:“……”

Zhang Siyi repeated the dialogue at that time, Bi Lele turned a blind eye: “When you admitted to liking the cactus, isn’t that just a roundabout way of asking him for it?”

Zhang Siyi mouth twitched. The plants were in different pots so naturally he didn’t know that the small one came from the bigger one. So, why was asking about it so weird….

Bi Lele continued: “In any case, the girl was nice and had a cheerful personality. Although she didn’t say it out loud, it was obvious that she liked the boss. When she was picking her plant, she directly asked Gu Yu for the small cactus. Rather than directly refusing her, instead he smiled and simply asked: “If I casually give my small cactus away to a girl, then what does our relationship mean?”

Zhang Siyi did not react: “eh?”

“How can you not understand! As the one taking care of the plant, Gu Yu was like the father and since the new growth needed to be transplanted, it’s like a brother. If he gives away a member of his family to some girl, then what does that make her… of course, his wife!” Talking about the director made Bi Lele look around anxiously.

Figuring out a piece of truth, Zhang Siyi was flush with embarrassment.

“At that time, the girl was stunned and couldn’t speak. She didn’t stay for a long and after two months of internship, she left. But after that incident, everyone thought Gu Yu wouldn’t give away his cactus to anyone.” Bi Lele said, looking at Zhang Siyi with a sly look. “I didn’t expect him to give it away now.”

Heart beating faster, Zhang Siyi felt worried. In a flash he had a million thoughts about all that had happened the other day. Would he not think he was Gay? Gu Yu overheard all his ex-girlfriend grievances so if he gave him the cactus ball, was he treating Zhang Siyi differently? Was he trying to hint at something?

Zhu Hongzhen snorted: “Don’t listen to her nonsense. The girls here love to make up stories. The boss just told her that as a euphemism to express his uninterested feelings towards her. Besides, the ball grew out from the big one. It’s a brother, not a child!”

Bi Lele said: “The cactus comes from the same root. If you don’t cut it away, then it will stick together! The seeds that come from the blossoms are the offspring, you have no understanding!”

Zhu Hongzhen: “Forget the details. That’s one crazy theory.”

Although Bi Lele’s comments made a bit of sense, Zhang Siyi was more inclined believe Zhu Hongzhen’s rhetoric. He took a deep breath, consoling himself: It’s an office plant, not a gay thing. (=_=)

However, this story also made Zhang Siyi realize that he may not be as special to Gu Yu as he initially thought. Although they were from the same area and high school, it doesn’t really mean anything. Gu Yu wasn’t just an alumnus but also a graduate of T University with countless additional schoolmates, not to mention, all of his colleagues and additional acquaintances from the industry.

Thinking about it in this way, Zhang Siyi could not help but feel a little disappointed. He didn’t dwell on the subject further so he quickly recovered his mood.

Since there wasn’t a new task early in the morning, Zhang Siyi took the opportunity to take pictures of his work desk and post them to the circle of friends on social media. Note: “new job!”

All Zhang Siyi wanted to do was send one photo and put away the mobile phone, but quickly someone commented. The praises Zhang Siyi received made him feel great.

One of his friends, Xue Wenhan, who was still living in the UK as he was studying for a master’s degree in a related architectural field, wrote a note. Calculating the time difference, the time was two o’clock in the middle of the night. It seems that his friend was still staying up late, but whether it is because he is studying or playing, Zhang Siyi didn’t know.

Many “Congratulations!“ messages appeared as well as inquiries about the new job and how he was doing… Zhang Siyi had no time to reply to them one by one. He was seeking approval and wanted to quickly reply with a short response, but a familiar voice sounded from behind him: “You seem to have a lot of time on your hands.”

Zhang Siyi froze and almost dropped his phone.

Standing at the end of the desk, unbeknown to Zhang Siyi, Gu Yu appeared behind him. With a cup in his hand, he was looking at him with penetrating, sharp eyes and smiling. Without giving Zhang Siyi the chance to talk, he commanded, “Come.”

Perturbed, Zhang Siyi hurriedly shoved his phone into his trousers pocket and followed him.

Gu Yu put two chairs in front of the desk. When Zhang Siyi sat in one, a girl with long straight hair came, and asked softly: “Looking for me?”

Gu Yu said “hmm” and indicated with his hand the vacancy to the side of Zhang Siyi, so she can sit down.

Two people looked at each other and Zhang Siyi was first to introduce himself: “Hello, I am Zhang Siyi. I was just hired yesterday.”

The girl smiled shyly, shook hands with him and softly said: “I heard. I am Du Rui, Hello.”

When Gu Yu saw that they had finished introductions, he pushed two stacks of information in front of them. “This is a design summary of a single youth apartment in S City. It requires three sets of plans. Du Rui will do two sets and Zhang Siyi will do one set. We will meet again in the conference room at 1:30 this afternoon to discuss the preliminary design plans. The plans need to be refined before the end of the work day.”

When Du Rui replied with a simple ‘understood’ and stood up to leave the office, Zhang Siyi was still digesting what Gu Yu said.

“Hey, wait.” Out of the door, Zhang Siyi hurriedly asked her, “He only gave us one morning to work on our designs? With lunch break, that only leaves three hours….?”

Du Rui calmly said: “Yes.”

Zhang Siyi was shocked. When they were studying, they were given a week for each assignment. Now he must do it in three hours? This time he couldn’t ignore the project data.

Du Rui, who had more experience than him, remained calm. Can he do it?

Zhang Siyi stiffly returned to his seat and frantically opened the information about the project to start reading it. The pressure of Gu Yu’s assignment was making him distressed. Never mind what earlier praise he received; Zhang Siyi didn’t have time to think about anything! With such constraints, Zhang Siyi’s motivation accelerated and was determined to create a good plan on time.

Since the project was to design a single apartment aimed at the young adult demographic, Zhang Siyi was more familiar with the work than he did with the bathrooms in the large office building. After all, he lived in a student apartment in the UK. In addition, he experienced many beautiful places when traveling abroad. He tried to draw from memory but changed it and instead used models. He would just have to wait until the meeting to explain his thoughts. Although it was a bit rough, Zhang Siyi was surprised at his efficiency. If he could have done this while studying, it would have been so easy!”

At lunch time, Zhang Siyi ordered a meal at the company and went to the dining area with his colleagues.

Du Rui sat two rows away from Zhang Siyi while Lu Qiao was between them. When she passed by, Zhang Siyi wanted to call out to her and ask her about the plan during lunch time, but Du Rui said: “You eat first. I haven’t finished my designs. I’ll eat later.”

Zhang Siyi thought about it too. She needed to draw two sets, and her workload was much greater than his. Curious, Zhang Siyi looked over at Du Rui to see what she was drawing. He was surprised as there were several already finished, beautifully drawn designs on the table.

“Oh my God! Are you drawing designs by hand?” Zhang Siyi said shocked.

Du Rui smiled and shook her head: “No, the designs have been drawn with a computer. I am making a few final touches now, so I can add some explanations afterwards.”

Zhang Siyi was stammered: “You, you are so good!”

Although the architecture department in the UK had related drawing courses, the department didn’t have a requirement for students to be very skilled at sketching and drawing by hand. Add the fact that computer design software was popular, Zhang Siyi rarely planned out his designs by hand. Without the years of practice at university, he absolutely couldn’t draw to the same professional level as Du Rui.

Du Rui humbly said: “Thanks, but I’m just ok. Take a look over at Yuan Zhicheng drawings. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and his drawings are really great.”

Zhang Siyi didn’t want to say anything. He wanted to bury his own head in a basin of sand!

His relaxed state of mind from earlier quickly dissolved. Once he returned to his desk, he only had a half an hour left until the meeting and his mind was focused on the task. He used to laze around and check his social media accounts frequently, but now, it wasn’t something he was even considering.

He was looking over his design again when a message appeared at half passed one. Gu Yu had summoned him and Du Rui to meet.

In the discussion room, both he and Du Rui placed the designs out on the table for review. It felt like he was back in University having a weekly project critique and was waiting for his professor’s approval. Even knowing he had to plan out one apartment while she was assigned two, he was surprised at the volume of work Du Rui brought to the discussion room compared to his own. It made him feel wholly inadequate. On top of that, her renderings where so beautiful to look at! As a result, he broke out in a cold sweat.

Gu Yu quickly reviewed the work. He first acknowledged the volume of Du Rui work and then let Zhang Siyi look at the two designs. “What do you think?”

“Ah, uh, very good.” The quality of those hand drawn pictures has already blinded Zhang Siyi.

After careful examination, without any hesitation, Gu Yu was quick to point out several flaws in Du Rui’s scheme, one of which rendered it largely useless. She felt like crying.

On the side, Zhang Siyi was feeling apprehensive, only to find out that what he suffered last night was nothing. It was shocking. Gu Yu was a terrible person. He really was terrible! Even though Du Rui had worked so hard, he didn’t feel any pity at all!

When it was Zhang Siyi’s turn, he was prepared to hear the worst. Maybe there was a reason for Du Rui’s criticism, but he thought that if Gu Yu also found faults to his own work, Du Rui might feel a little better.

However, after looking over his design, Gu Yu just nodded and said two words: “It’s good.”

…… Good. that’s it?

Yes, there was nothing more to say.

For the next phase of the draft, the Director had Du Rui modify one of her plans, then combine them with Zhang Siyi efforts and finally said. “All the toilets are to be managed by Zhang Siyi.” He nodded at them, and then left.

Zhang Siyi: “…”

Zhang Siyi watched him nonchalantly leave the room. When he turned around, he saw Du Rui staring at his own drawings. Zhang SIyi wanted to ease the directors’ words in a small way but didn’t know what to say. Du Rui had worked at the office for a long time. He only just started, so how was he qualified to offer this senior a comforting word?

Embarrassed, he saw Du Rui wipe the corner of her eye and look up: “Zhang Siyi, can you talk to me about the thoughts behind your design?”

Zhang Siyi saw her firm tears and red eyes, but then the girl expression suddenly changed. A hint of stubbornness and determination was seen.
