Chapter 151: Tense

______________________

Zhang Siyi: “What!? Your brother asked me to call you.”

Gu Yao explained: “When you sent me the message, my brother had privately asked me to come over already.”

Immediately remembering what Gu Yu had mentioned in the kitchen, Zhang Siyi turned to stare at Gu Yu, waiting for his explanation.

Gu Yu plainly stated: “Your acting was bad.”

Zhang Siyi: “huh?”

Rubbing his head, Gu Yu sighed then said: “You were being too obvious. I noticed your mother staring at us often so I asked my sister to come over to divert her attention.”

When Zhang Siyi heard Gu Yu, he felt a little guilty. He couldn’t admit to Gu Yu that his mother was a big rot-girl.

….. Could it be that his mother really was thinking of them as a pair? But how could it be with her overly beaming attitude towards Gu Yao? Or, was it really as Gu Yu said; his sister really did over shadowed his mother’s rot-girl thoughts? (=_=)

“Cough. Ah, that’s it.” Zhang Siyi wasn’t particularly angry at Gu Yu going behind his back.

Certainly, there is more to Gu Yu’s reason than that. Since it has taken him a very long time to get as far as he has with his relationship with Zhang Siyi, he was on high alert. If he only had to rely on himself, there wouldn’t be a problem maintaining his relationship, but he is uncertain whether or not Zhang Siyi would buckle under pressure.

At twenty-three, Zhang Siyi is six years younger than Gu Yu. The bright future both career wise and relationship wise that a young adult has is always a concern for any parent and Zhang Siyi’s parents are no different. Even if his parents did not specifically come to visit with marriageable prospects, they understood that when he reaches the age of marriage, there will be plenty of women to choose from because Zhang Siyi’s family conditions and background weren’t bad.

Gu Yu wasn’t afraid of Zhang Siyi’s parents rejecting their relationship. He was afraid that Zhang Siyi himself hasn’t prepared himself mentally to fight social pressure.

Since they have been together for less than two months, their love period hasn’t ended and thus, Gu Yu feels like their relationship isn’t stable enough. If both parents realized the truth now and opposed them, it would be too easy to tear them apart. The pressure and responsibility by being an only son would shake Zhang Siyi to the core and ultimately, Gu Yu thinks Zhang Siyi would become duty-bound and leave him.

Instead of tackling the issue head on, it is better to strengthen the bonds between the families first by allowing Zhang Siyi’s parents to misunderstand the relationship with his sister.

However, Gu Yu will not talk about his reasons openly to Zhang Siyi because he is afraid since he has shielded him, that he doesn’t really understand the cultural pressure of thier situation. Also, he lacks the trust needed to follow Gu Yu without question and instead Zhang Siyi would simply become very angry and blow up at him in an argument.

In any case, after listening to Gu Yu’s short explanation, Zhang Siyi seemed relieved. Walking the dog, Zhang Siyi and Gu Yao were laughing and joking around. Gu Yu smiled at them.

When they returned home, Gu Yao asked Zhang Siyi if he knew about a recent trendy App called the Era of Music and whether or not he had played it.

Since Zhang Siyi had been under the influence of Gu Yu, he didn’t have time to play games anymore. Normally, when he got home from work, he either studied work related material or was with Gu Yu.

Listening to Gu Yao describe the game, Zhang Siyi was immediately interested and quickly went upstairs to get his recently unused iPad. After downloading the game, Gu Yao briefly showed him how to play. First, Zhang Siyi picked an easy tune. The game is similar to a dance game where you push a button that coincides with a particular falling icon.

Since Zhang Siyi plays the violin, he quickly adjusted to the rhythm of the music and in the first attempt, he achieved all the combo points and scored with a 99.9% accuracy; an A+.

“It is very simple!” Zhang Siyi commented.

“What’s so great about level 1. Let’s see what you can do on a more difficult challenge!” She grabbed Zhang Siyi’s iPad and selected a harder sequence: “I can play up to level five.”

Since they were similar in age, they easily got along. After Gu Yu finished wiping the dog’s claws, he walked into the living room and noticed the two of them close together chatting and laughing.

Gu Yu wanted to join them for a bit, but since he didn’t believe playing video games were worth his time, he gave up on the idea of sitting with them. After checking the cat food bowls, he grabbed the vacuum and started tidying up. His sister loudly complained: “Brother, we can’t hear the music!”

Gu Yu: “……”

Even though she complained to her brother, Gu Yao continued to stare at Zhang Siyi while he played the game. As he finished the levels, she grabbed his face and exclaimed with excitement: “Ahhhhh! All A+!”

Less then thirty minutes later, Zhang Siyi broke through level five without a problem. He breathed a sigh of relief. Noticing Gu Yao’s unbelieving attitude transform into worship he said: “See. It’s easy.”

With Gu Yao star-struck gaze, she watched Zhang Siyi with adoration: “How did you do it! I played several times without getting an A+.”

Zhang Siyi chuckled a ‘he-he’ and said: “I don’t know. Maybe it is because I can play the violin.”

Gu Yao instantly became Zhang Siyi’s fan-girl: “Really? Oh My God! At the time that the Korean version of “Boys Over Flowers” was broadcasted, I was obsessed with Kim Hyun Jong. Since then, I really like boys who can play violin!”

Zhang Siyi was feeling a little embarrassed: “Well, if you want. I can play it for you.”

Looking forward to answering Zhang Siyi positively, Gu Yao was suddenly interrupted by her brother: “No.”

Zhang Siyi: “……”

Standing next to the vacuum cleaner, Gu Yu emitted an ‘I’m not happy’ signal from head to toe.

Surprised at his outburst, Gu Yao wanted to argue with him and ask why not, but her brother cut her off: “It’s almost ten. Most people are asleep. Are you not concerned with the neighbors if you play the violin so late at night?” Gu Yu stared at Zhang Siyi coldly: “And you, are you a child? Still playing video games with no restraint.”

Being shut down by Gu Yu, Zhang Siyi couldn’t stand it anymore. He said: “What is the problem? Today is Saturday. There is plenty of time to play.”

Hearing Zhang Siyi, Gu Yao had the courage to speak up: “Yeah. I usually go to bed at midnight in school. Ten o’clock isn’t late at all! This game is really fun so let’s play. Just because you don’t play video games, doesn’t mean you can prevent us from playing.”

Feeling sullen, Gu Yu was angry. These two kids just ignored him. But, what can he do? He can’t admit that he’s jealous…

After setting the vacuum cleaner aside in a corner of the wall, Gu Yu didn’t say anything and instead went straight upstairs.

Zhang Siyi: “……”

Gu Yao:”……”

Gu Yao thought her brother was acting strange. Playing games wasn’t a big deal and he didn’t usually care so much about them, but today, he seems particularly vitriolic. His reaction was just too much!

Gu Yao expressed her wonder out loud: “Why is my brother so tense?”

Zhang Siyi bowed his head and sighed with a narrow eye. “Who knows. Maybe he was scratched by a wild cat.”

Gu Yao: “poof……”

As the mood to play was ruined, the two looked up at each other and both sighed. Gu Yu commented: “Forget it. Time to go upstairs and sleep.”

Slowly, Zhang Siyi walked upstairs with little sound. He surveyed the area and since Gu Yu wasn’t on the platform, he assumed Gu Yu went back to his room.

Zhang Siyi dropped Gu Yao off at his room first. Since his parents had visited, the bed was made and the room was already clean.

Gu Yao saw the violin at the foot of the bed. With eyes bright, she stated in surprise: “Wow, you really can play the violin!”

Looking at the instrument, Zhang Siyi reflected, is Gu Yu jealous because of the violin……? Well, it’s a possibility.

Even though he did tell Gu Yu that he only played the violin for people that he liked as a ploy, Gu Yu may not be happy hearing Zhang Siyi tell Gu Yao that he would play for her. To think he would get jealous over his own sister……

Zhang Siyi grinned and responded to Gu Yao: “It’s too late today, I’ll have a chance to play another time.”

Gu Yao nodded and looked happy.

Zhang Siyi pointed to the direction of the other bedroom. “Well, I will go see your brother. If you are tired, go to sleep.”

With some reluctance, Gu Yao gestured and waved her hand: “Go ahead.”

Turning around, Zhang Siyi went into Gu Yu’s room without knocking on the door.

Gu Yu wasn’t asleep. He was standing in front of his desk practicing calligraphy. On the table were several written words; cold, quiet.

Zhang Siyi: “……”

Glancing at him without expression, Gu Yu picked up a picture book to cover the part he had already written then continued to write something else.

Zhang Siyi: “….” I have already seen it! (=_=)

Zhang Siyi gently closed the door and went to the bed to sit down. Looking at Gu Yu’s back, he patiently waited for him to speak, but Gu Yu continued to practice writing, ignoring him.

After five minutes, Zhang Siyi felt anxious. He stood up and hugged Gu Yu from behind suddenly. As a result, Gu Yu calligraphy stroke was heavy on the rice paper.

Zhang Siyi tightened his arms and pulled him in his direction: “What are you doing? If I don’t speak, you just ignore me?”

Gu Yu snorted softly: “Since you don’t listen to me, why should I talk to you.”

Exasperated, Zhang Siyi asked: “It is obvious you are mad at me, but you still walked away without saying anything…… Can’t we talk?”

Chapter 150: Match

____________________

After an hour of walking, they decided to head back to the villa. Once they returned, while Gu Yu offered tea to drink in the living room with Father Zhang, Mother Zhang rolled up her sleeves, put on an apron and called Zhang Siyi to the kitchen to help start preparing an early dinner.

First, the two dealt with the food-stuffs that Zhang Siyi’s family brought with them. Since the fried fish was partially prepared, his mother schooled him: “If its thoroughly cooked when you store the fish in the refrigerator, then it won’t be tasty when you reheat it later. When you want to eat it, take out the fish, put a little oil on it and set it in a hot pan.”

Zhang Siyi nodded vaguely and intended to turn back to Gu Yu to tell him, but his mother interrupted: “Normally, who cooks?”

Zhang Siyi answered without thought: “Gu Yu.”

Pausing a moment, Zhang Siyi’s mother seemed a little surprised and asked: “All the time? And that isn’t a problem? “

Zhang Siyi replied as a matter of fact: “No. He cooks and I wash the dishes. His cooking is better than mine.”

Hearing thus, Mother Zhang wondered how there can be such a perfect man; handsome with strong work ethics and the ability to cook and do housework…. Why, it just like the characters from one-of-those-books….

Zhang Siyi interrupted his mother’s thoughts: “It’s not like I do nothing when he cooks. I normally help him prepare the food too.”

Mother Zhang: “……”  – These two children live together like a married couple……… – Oh, no! Xu Ruqin, don’t think about it. Do I want him to get involved?

Mother Zhang coughed lightly, and asked: “Isn’t Gu Yu’s sister also in Haicheng? With so much food, why don’t you ask her to come over for dinner tonight?”

Startled, Zhang Siyi froze and instinctively replied with reluctance: “His sister’s school is far away from here. It takes more than an hour by subway.”  In fact, there is nothing wrong with asking Gu Yao to come over and eat. The real problem is the motivation behind his mother’s invitation.

However, his mother was very insistent: “It is only four o’clock now. Since Haicheng is a big city, an hour isn’t really a lot of time to travel. There is plenty of time for her to travel here for dinner so hurry up and ask her.

Feeling awkward, Zhang Siyi looked out of the kitchen and asked Gu Yu unenthusiastically: “Hey. My mother would like your sister to come over for dinner.”

Pausing his conversation with Zhang Siyi’s father, Gu Yu looked up and calmly replied: “Go ahead and send her a message and ask.”

Zhang Siyi: “……” – Gu Yu didn’t object? And with no excuse to refuse? He could have simply said ‘my sister may not be free’ …ah!

Feeling depressed and duty bound, Zhang Siyi pulled out his mobile phone and sent a message in their three-person group chat: “Calling the revolutionary comrades.”

……  I hope Gu Yao won’t see it… don’t look, don’t look, don’t look…… not for another two or three hours before you check the message!

Gu Yao: “I’m here! What does the Division want?”

Zhang Siyi: “Wow! You replied so quickly!”

Gu Yao: “Ha-ha. I was just chatting with friends. What’s up?”

Zhang Siyi: “Are you free now?”

Gu Yao: “What?”

Zhang Siyi: “My parents are here visiting and my mom would like it if you came over for dinner.”

Gu Yao: “Why do I feel that Auntie has ulterior motives? (→_→)”

Zhang Siyi: “Your feeling is not wrong. (=_=)”

After a half-minute, Gu Yao replied: “Ok. I’ll pack up and come right away.”

Zhang Siyi: “!!!” Even knowing there are ‘ulterior motives’ she still comes!? What is she thinking!?

Returning to the kitchen, Zhang Siyi was dismayed: “She said she will come right away.”

Mother Zhang took a look at her son and didn’t understand her son’s resistance and depressed mood. She took this opportunity to remind him of exhibiting proper polite behavior: “She isn’t just anyone. She is Gu Yu’s sister and he asked you to message her. Stop moping. It is one thing if she can’t come, but another if you continue to act that way.”

Zhang Siyi: “……” Well, his mother has a point.

Just as Mother Zhang was plating the final dishes for dinner, at nearly six in the evening, Gu Yao arrived. Today, she was wearing a pale pink dress that was simple and elegant. On her feet, she wore a pair of small jade sandals. With her facial features, big eyes and clothing choices, together they made her look exceptionally cute. Zhang Siyi didn’t understand why Gu Yao, this elf-like beauty hasn’t found a boyfriend yet. It is simply unscientific!

Since the small table that Gu Yu and Zhang Siyi usually ate at wasn’t large enough for everyone, Gu Yu had raised the extension arms on the sides to make the table top larger. Now, there was plenty of room for all eight dishes and five people.

“Good Uncle and Aunt.” Gu Yao politely greeted Zhang’s father and mother first.

Zhang Siyi’s father has never seen Gu Yao before. He has only heard about her from Mother Zhang who once said she was like an angel descended from the heavens. He thought she was exaggerating, but upon looking at her, he could see for himself that she wasn’t. Gu Yao really appeared to be a mythical being.

Gu Yao noticed the golden retriever at her side and excitedly said: “Ah! Doggie!”

Watching Gu Yao cheerful and undisguised, lively nature, Mother Zhang was once again reminded of the ideal daughter-in-law; a perfect match. Zhang Siyi’s mother smiled broadly and asked: “You haven’t seen this dog?”

Petting the dog, Gu Yao answered her: “Well, I have been busy with my thesis at school and haven’t been back here since Zhang Siyi moved in.”

Mother Zhang enthusiastically and warmly gestured: “Come here and let’s eat first.”

During the meal, Zhang Siyi’s father showed obvious curiosity for Gu Yao. He rarely ever talked while eating, but today was different. Throughout the meal, he constantly asked Gu Yu questions about his sister; how old she was, where she was studying, what subjects…. The information that one normally enquires about when trying to make a match for a son.

Looking at his Father’s extraordinary soft facial expression, Zhang Siyi felt so embarrassed he could die. He didn’t understand what Gu Yao was thinking. Earlier, not in the group chat, she texted him and said she could help, but this is too much. How is this helping? It is only making his parents confused!

After dinner, Zhang Siyi went to the kitchen and washed the dishes feeling distraught. For a long time, he could hear the bout of laughter from the living room as his father and mother continued to talk with Gu Yu and his sister.

Feeling indignant over current events, Zhang Siyi took out his anger on the dishes and roughly handled them. Gu Yu came in silently and walked behind him to kiss his ear. Startled, Zhang Siyi jumped in fright and quickly looked behind: “What are you doing!”

Gu Yu pinched his helpless face: “Don’t pout. Smile.”

Zhang Siyi: “……” With his parent’s behavior, how can he laugh now!?

Gu Yu patted his shoulder and said: “I know what you’re thinking and I’ll talk to you later.” Afterwards, Gu Yu returned to the living room.

When Zhang Siyi finished washing the dishes, he walked to the living room and sat with them on the couch to join in on their discussion. After a while, Zhang Siyi’s parents decided it was time to head back to the hotel to rest. As his parents were gathering their belongings and everyone was putting on their coats, Zhang Siyi took the opportunity to walk to dog and got out Townhouse’s leash.

When they were leaving, Zhang Siyi’s mother worried: “It is half past eight already. Gu Yao’s school is so far away. Is she going to go back this late?”

Gu Yu smiled and said: “Auntie, rest assured. I won’t let her go back this late at night. The room where Zhang Siyi is now living was originally setup as a place for my sister to come visit. Zhang Siyi, come to my room tonight and squeeze in with me.”

Zhang Siyi: “…… Oh.”

Mother Zhang was very satisfied with the arrangement: “That’s right. It is not very safe for a girl to be traveling so late alone.”

Saying their good nights, Zhang Siyi sent his parents off and the three of them walked the dog. Zhang Siyi glared at Gu Yao: “Hey! What were you doing!? You knew what my parents were thinking and you deliberately made them misunderstand.”

Gu Yao didn’t appreciate being yelled at: “You’re wrong! My brother called me!”

Chapter 149: Object

___________________

Father Zhang snorted and interrupted her: “You are acting like the country folk who moved the whole family into the big city. You didn’t need to bring the kitchen-sink.”

Mother Zhang glared at Father Zhang then glanced in Gu Yu direction, expecting him to say something.

Rarely in his Father’s defense, this time Zhang Siyi spoke up: “Mom, Haicheng is not without lychees. Every time you see me, you give me so many things. I am very happy knowing you have good food to eat so there is no need to give it all away. If I need something, I’ll buy it here.”

Zhang Siyi’s mother smiled and scolded him: “How can a family member say there is no need? Did your rabbit brain break? When did you learn to talk that way to your family?”

In all honestly, Zhang Siyi didn’t know why he talked back to his parents. Probably the reason was the result of being with Gu Yu. He was actually very nervous and feeling guilty. He knew that his parents may never approve and be satisfied with his life’s decision and as a result, Zhang Siyi felt a sense of worry and loss.

When they arrived at Yuanshan Garden, Gu Yu first dropped them off out front to unpack the car and then he drove around to the parking lot. When Zhang Siyi’s Mother stepped out of the car, she said: “This is a really nice area to live in.”

Proudly, Zhang Siyi introduced his parents to his home: “This area is the old city and the nearby buildings are protected.” Through the portcullis and across the courtyard, he took his parents to his home. When he opened the door, Townhouse was there wagging his tail to greet them.

Ms. Zhang was surprised: “Hey, there is a dog!”

Zhang Siyi Said: “Well, you needn’t be afraid. He is very docile and doesn’t usually bark. “

When his mother heard Zhang Siyi say ‘you needn’t be afraid’ she chuckled and smiled. She felt like for the first time, the tone her son emulated was a little bit like an adult.

Changing his shoes, Father Zhang asked: “You and Gu Yu have to go to work, but also have time to take care of a dog?”

Zhang Siyi: “There isn’t much more time needed to take care of him. After eating, we take the dog out for a walk. It’s not a hassle.”

Father Zhang continued: “Your mother also mentioned various business trips and you are expected to be going abroad soon. How will you take care of the dog when you leave?”

Zhang Siyi: “The pet shop has foster care facilities you can register your dog with.”

Looking at the golden retriever, mother Zhang suddenly remembered: “Isn’t this the same dog your friend bought and posted pictures on your social media page? What was it…? The son of Heartless Han?”

Puzzled, his Father asked: “Who is the son of Heartless Han?”

Zhang Siyi’s mother answered: “His original roommate that he rented an apartment with. The one that had the accident at home and now is abroad.”

Zhang Siyi smiled and said: “Ha-ha, you even remembered that.”

Mother Zhang quipped: “I am your mother. What is there that I do not know? I have gathered all information and read every message on your social media pages. You used to post frequently about what you did everyday including your meals. Now that you are at work, you post so much less. Are you too busy at the company?”

By the warmth of his mother statement, Zhang Siyi heart was moved. It was as Gu Yu said earlier. Only a mother would care about the details of what he ate and did every day.

After putting away the packages, Zhang Siyi went to show his parents the house. Previously, when he was a roommate with his friends, he didn’t feel the need to show his parents the apartment. Afterall, it was only one room he rented with two other friends, but now there is a difference. With his relationship with Gu Yu, this house is not only his place of residence, but his home as well.

Like a small master, Zhang Siyi proudly showed his parents his room and the living spaces both upstairs and downstairs.

The downstairs living room is mainly used for receiving and entertaining guests. The upstairs terrace is more of an intimate setting where they can relax at night. It is a good place to read books or play a game of chess at the small table on the platform. If the weather is good, the sliding glass door can be opened to let the fresh air come inside.

Mother Zhang looked around and sighed: “It really is a good environment. Old Zhang, you see this place that these two live in. Studying architecture in the end was good for your son. Its more beautiful then the places on TV.”

Walking around with his hands clasped behind his back, Zhang Siyi’s father was very satisfied. The collection of books and elegant atmosphere in the home was the perfect residence for a scholar.

Scratching his head Zhang Siyi said: ”Hey now, this is Gu Yu’s work. I just sit back and enjoy it.” Zhang Siyi smiled and wanted to brag about Gu Yu to his parents for them to understand — This wonderful man is your son’s boyfriend!

His Father lectured him: “Know that you are enjoying another’s achievements. Living together is no better then living at home. There is no babysitter to cook and do your laundry. Don’t be lazy and take advantage of it. Although Gu Yu is older than you, there is no good reason for him to take care of you to this extent.”

Hearing his father’s lecture, Zhang Siyi wasn’t as resentful towards him as he had been in the past. He was happy to explain his living conditions: “I know. The division of labor is very clear. He cooks and I wash the dishes. On odd days I clean, and on even days he does. On the weekends we have time to do laundry and finish chores together.”

In fact, although the rules were clearly stipulated, Zhang Siyi was very lazy sometimes and would forget. As a result, Gu Yu would still clean-up for him. Listening to his dad, Zhang Siyi only reacted and realized that he hasn’t received a bonus from Gu Yu in a long time. It seems, Zhang Siyi really does need to listen to his father and earn some bonus points in the future.

Mother Zhang smiled: “No wonder the home is very clean. My friend always complained about the pet hair getting all over the place, but I don’t see any here. It’s a very tidy.”

In the past two months, Gu Yu was adamant about brushing the dog properly and keeping the family clean. He was more dedicated then the dog’s original father.

As they were talking, Gu Yu came back and the three of them went downstairs to decide on a place to eat.

Gu Yu: “You have had a long trip and it’s not too early anymore. How about we get a quick bite to eat downstairs?”

Ms. Zhang was very polite: “We brought a lot of dishes and can eat the dumplings once they are cooked.”

Gu Yu looked at the time: “I’m afraid you are hungry now, and cooking the food will take some time. There is a small place that is inexpensive down the street that makes very good dumplings. We can eat a little now and prepare a nice dinner together for later.”

After listening to Gu Yu, Zhang father nodded: “Zhang Siyi should have arranged it so he would take us out to dinner. And by the way, I am pleased to have you join us. Now, you are going to be the host. Isn’t that too much of a bother?”

Gu Yu smiled briefly and said: “Uncle, you are polite. You rarely come visit. It’s only proper for me to be the one making the invitations for dinner.”

The more mother Zhang heard Gu Yu and witness his actions, the more she liked him. While they were walking to the restaurant, she held Zhang Siyi back a little and asked: “Gu Yu is thirty. Does he have a girlfriend? You are living with him now. Does your presence affect his personal life?”

Feeling guilty, Zhang Siyi heart was tight and pretended to not know: “Not that I know of.”

His mother had heard Zhang Siyi’s explanation for moving and living with Gu Yu. She commented: “He was originally living alone. In order to help you, he has sacrificed his personal life. You need to pay attention to the consequences of your actions. Hurry and move out. Don’t bother people and cause unnecessary trouble. You know?”

Zhang Siyi: “Oh…”  Hey, in fact, he is the “object” of Gu Yu! ╭(╯_╰)╮

The small restaurant was indeed very close. When its late, Zhang Siyi and Gu Yu often go there to eat since the price is moderate and the food is good.

After lunch, the four people went shopping nearby. Zhang Siyi told his parents about the origins of the distant mountain villa. He pointed out the various architectural styles and characteristics of the nearby old buildings.

However, because the expert is present, where Zhang Siyi was wrong, Gu Yu still pointed out his mistakes and corrected him.

Zhang Siyi rarely had the opportunity to showcase his knowledge in front of his parents. Since Gu Yu kept correcting him, the result wasn’t what he wanted. Feeling annoyed, they bickered with one another. However, even if the words expressed sounded like they were fighting, their gestures and mannerisms suggested something more akin to flirting.

Even though Zhang Siyi’s father didn’t think much of the scene before him, Zhang Siyi mother had been exposed to those-kinds-of-stories. Although she knows she shouldn’t, she couldn’t help her mind from wandering…… In fact, her son and Gu Yu are also a good match.
