Chapter 157: Osaka Part III

___________________

Almost everyone that walked by the men’s table, showed a surprised expression. The interaction between Gu Yu and Zhang Siyi was engraved in their memories as there wasn’t any sense of being a fake couple.

Like the other male and female couples playing the game, Gu Yu held the box in one hand and used a fork with the other to spear an octopus ball and held it out for Zhang Siyi. Zhang Siyi was looking down at his phone. He leaned over, stretched his neck and opened his mouth, ready to receive the food. When Gu Yu placed it in his mouth, he cried out: “Mmm, hot, hot!”

Looking at him in concern, Gu Yu handed the fork to him and said: “Take your time.”

This little interaction between them was intimate and exuded love more than any of the interplay of the “normal” heterosexual couples in the group!

Their surprising behavior wasn’t only limited to Gu Yu feeding Zhang Siyi. There were other moments of strong intimacy. For example, when Gu Yu wiped the sauce from the corner of Zhang Siyi mouth and then handed him the napkin. In addition, when Zhang Siyi was using his phone to load the road map, the two of them would consult the screen together. The ease with which they communicated with one another screamed love. It was sweet and more loving then a real couple!

Xu Jia and Bi Lele could not resist gossiping about what they were witnessing on the side…….

Xu Jia: “Oh my God, Auntie Four and Gu Yu are so good together!”

Bi Lele: “I didn’t think the Boss would play the game.”

Xu Jia: “Me neither. At first, I thought the boss passed us for Four so he wouldn’t need to play.”

Bi Lele: “I thought so too, but now, I think Gu Yu is really playing.”

Xu Jia: “It’s a scene right out of a book.  There is so much “Moe”!”

With thoughts of their favorite books, the two women smiled excitedly.

In contrast, the aura between the other couple at the table wasn’t good. Tao Fei was having a heated argument with Lu Qiao.

Lu Qiao: “Hey! I only ate one, but you ate three!”

Tao Fei: “One is plenty. Since you ate two meals on the plane, the box should have been mine alone.”

Lu Qiao: “That’s your own fault!

“That’s enough to eat!” Tao Fei was annoyed by Lu Qiao. He grabbed the box and ran off with it.

Angry, Lu Qiao waved a fork at him and quickly jumped up to run after him: “Hey! You stop right there!”

Tao Fei wolfed down five balls in one breath before Lu Qiao caught up to him. He left the last two remaining in the box and handed it to Lu Qiao: “I’ll give you the rest.”

Lu Qiao: “…”

From the onset, one of the pairs exuded nothing but love while the other pair seemed to be bickering like a married couple. As a whole they acted like one happy family and as a result, they became the focus of everyone’s attention.

After eating for a little while, Zhang Siyi discovered his colleagues were staring at him and Gu Yu with a questioning look.

…… Uh, were they being too explicit? Were they seen?

Feeling anxious, Zhang Siyi started to sweat and his heart began to race. He glanced at Gu Yu to see any reaction from him and without showing any hints of wrongdoing, Gu Yu remained calm and stoic as ever.

He took a deep breath to calm himself and stopped himself from feeling like he did something wrong. Just as Tao Fei said, the more he obsessed over his actions, the easier it was for onlookers to think there was something strange going on. Since they were playing a couples game, it wasn’t unusual to show a little intimacy and in fact, it was expected. This was a rare one-time opportunity to show their love in front of so many colleagues.

After disposing the empty food boxes in the trash, the group continued on their way to their original destination.

On the ground floor of the Umeda Sky Building, there was a sunken open-air natural courtyard. Planted with common maple trees and decorated with hills and pools, the courtyard was quite ordinary. However, because it was located between the modern skyscrapers, like an oasis in a desert, it was a stark contrast to the extremely rigid man-made steel structures of the building.

Arriving at the building at nearly six in the evening, the sky was starting to darken. When they finished taking pictures, the group queued in line to buy tickets for the observation deck. Part of the reason why the observation desk was so special was because of the escalator ride to the platform. It was located of the on the fifth floor of the building and it brought tourists up to the sightseeing area through the air by connecting the two buildings.

Surrounded by cool blue light, the interior lighting in the escalator shaft made it feel like a person was traveling on a space-ship. An hour later, the wait ended and they finally arrived at the top of the building in the open air.

As the sun was setting, Osaka was enshrouded in a satin-like rouge color in the summer evening. The view was breath taking and as a result, everyone flocked to the guardrails to take pictures silently.

From the vantage point on the desk, the entire Osaka plain and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Osaka Bay could be seen. As the setting sun dipped below the horizon, the neon lights of the city gradually shined brighter and brighter.

Neon lights were embedded in the guardrails effectively making it blend seamlessly with the neon lights of the night time city scape. As a result, it made one feel like they were floating in the sky as part of the milky-way galaxy. The fairy-tale like surroundings and romantic atmosphere made it easy to shed tears.

No wonder it was a sanctuary for lovers. Whether it was holding hands, or arms wrapped around each other’s shoulders and waist, all of the couples walking on the platform were displaying their love.

Fortunately, being paired, the group didn’t appear so different, however because the participants knew their display was only a game, they couldn’t help but feel a bit depressed and disappointed.

Paired with Bi Lele, Yuan Zhicheng looked at the picturesque scenery in front of him and sighed: “Hey, when I really have a girlfriend in the future, I must come here again.”

She replied: “I agree. It really is beautiful. After all these years of being dedicated to work and not having a chance to date, I’m starting to feel like life is incomplete.”

……

Of course, in addition to this kind of clear sentiment, there are others with ulterior motives, like Ji Feiyu and Du Rui….

Du Rui held her face: “Ahhh, It’s so beautiful. If I really had a boyfriend, this is the place I would like to go.”

Ji Feiyu: “Hey, you can temporarily treat me like your real boyfriend.”

Du Rui: “……”

……

And then, there is this……

Tao Fei: “Why are there so many couples here? I feel like I’m the only single dog in the world!”

Lu Qiao: “You aren’t alone.”

In order to make amends, Tao Fei had given Lu Qiao a bag of chocolate covered nuts and now that their relationship was reconciled, Lu Qiao asked: “Have you ever been in love?”

Tao Fei: “I have been with several girls in the past but deep feelings never developed while dating them. It’s not difficult to find a girl to be with. I simply can’t be bothered to look for a girlfriend.

Lu Qiao: “….”  The boat of friendship has capsized……

In an effort to avoid members of their group, Gu Yu and Zhang Siyi moved in the opposite direction. Once they were on the other side, they pressed the sides of their bodies close together.

Eager to see the scenery, Zhang Siyi forgot about his troubles. As the cool wind blew, Zhang Siyi shrunk his neck down and untied his jacket from his waist to put it on.

Gu Yu looked at him with concern and whispered: “Are you cold? Do you want me to hold you?”

Flush red, Zhang Siyi felt hot in an instant: “Here? How can we with so many people!”

Gu Yu: “Hmm……”

Zhang Siyi: “What are you smiling about?”

Gu Yu: “I feel very happy with you being by my side.”

Zhang Siyi: “……”

Zhang Siyi whispered to Gu Yu: “I feel the same way.”

Gu Yu couldn’t help it. He reached out and gently grabbed Zhang Siyi’s waist, holding him close: “We will go to more places together later.”

Zhang Siyi was a little scared by his bold move: “You, you… What if someone sees……?”

Gu Yu smiled: “Give me five more seconds at least.”

Before releasing each other, silently in their hearts, they counted to five.

Chapter 156: Osaka Part II

After purchasing tickets at the airport, the group from Borderless rode the subway to their accommodation. The subway they were riding on was similar as compared to the one in Haicheng. While walking outside to get to the subway entrance, some thought there was a difference in the air quality between the two countries. In an attempt to make a distinction for themselves, some members of the group started to deeply inhale. Someone spoke up and joked: “Don’t breathe so deeply. There is a lot of radiation in Japan.”

Everyone: “……”

The tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 caused an explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant that resulted in the leakage of radioactive materials into the surroundings. This caused a collapse of tourism for a long time and there was a rumor that Japan’s nuclear radiation index exceeded the standard. Was the statistic fake news or not?

After listening to their colleagues’ opinion, they subconsciously held their breath. Radiation and breathing don’t mix. Shit, nothing ever comes for free. The guy who was spreading disinformation was scolded by his peers. Along the way, the lively group of people chatted and laughed cheerfully.

Since Lu Qiao wasn’t happy with Tao Fei’s antics on the plane, he kept a distance between them. As a result, Tao Fei hung out with Gu Yu and Zhang Siyi like a third wheel.

Zhang Siyi looked at him and squinted: “Why don’t you go with Lu Qiao?”

Tao Fei pulled on his ear: “Didn’t you say that the guy was very easy to get along with? I thought I was being patient, but it seems like he has a bad temper and angers easily. Without a common topic, I don’t know what to say to him.”

Since Zhang Siyi knew Lu Qiao for many months through work without any issues, he found Tao Fei statement puzzling. Looking back on his previous interactions, he remembered Lu Qiao fight with the taxi cab driver. Lu Qiao wasn’t so gentle and good-natured as he appeared.

“He doesn’t like being bullied or being lied to. Did you say something to offend him?” Zhang Siyi asked him.

Tao Fei rolled his eyes: “Eh? I asked him if it was the first time he was on a plane. He glared at me like I owed him five million. Was that so bad?”

Zhang Siyi’s face twitched: “You didn’t have to be so blunt. His family situation isn’t very good.  Wouldn’t prodding his sore points hurt his self-respect?”

“It’s not my problem that his family is poor.” Tao Fei said unemotionally. “Hey, forget it. Let him go.”

Zhang Siyi: “……”

It was more crowded inside the subway car. With the sudden rush of people getting onto the car at the subway stop, Lu Qiao was pushed into Gu Yu’s back.

“Aah! Boss, I’m sorry. I’m sorry……”

Expressionless Gu Yu turned his head and flatly stated: “It’s all right.”

Exiting the subway, the group walked to hotel and paired up according to their room assignments. In order to give people enough time to find their rooms and unpack their luggage, Gu Yu informed everyone to meet in the lobby in fifteen minutes.

Lu Qiao took the initiative to find Zhang Siyi and his mood improved when he found him happily chatting with other colleagues. Overhearing Zhang Siyi conversation with Gu Yu at the airport, he asked: “Aunt Four, you’ve been to France?”

Zhang Siyi replied while smiling: “Well, when I graduated, I went to Europe with my classmate for a month and as a result I almost couldn’t find a job when I came home to China.”

“How much does it cost to travel in Europe for a month?” Lu Qiao envied him.

Zhang Siyi: “It took seventy-eighty thousand. It’s a little higher in the Nordic areas, but Western Europe is similar to the UK.”

Lu Qiao gasped. Seventy-eighty thousand was about a year’s annual salary! “Did your parents give you the money?”

Zhang Siyi plainly answered him: “It was the remainder of my living expenses.” Thinking a moment, Zhang Siyi realized that wasn’t really accurate: “Well, in fact, I guess it was. My living expenses were also provided by my parents. Ha-ha. At that time, I had no idea how hard it is to make money. Now that I am on my own, I understand.”

Becoming more and more jealous Lu Qiao asked: “How much did you spend abroad in total in the past few years?”

Zhang Siyi: “Little over a million.” (T/N: 1MYuan = ~130K Euro, ~145K USD)

“It costs that much money to travel abroad?” Lu Qiao joked: “Are you sure your Dad isn’t a corrupt official?”

In an instant, Zhang Siyi turned cold. He was surprised at Lu Qiao’s rudeness. This joke is not funny.

Even if his father is an official, he only had a salary. The Zhang family is not rich. With the help of his grandfather’s inheritance and a few decades of investments and savings, the assets of the Zhang family were invested in order to pay for Zhang Siyi’s education.

However, Zhang Siyi knew domestically, there were many people that believed in the sentiment: There is no such thing as a uncorrupt official.

Taking a breath, he calmly explained: “No. My mother originally had an apartment. At that time, the housing market was very good so they sold it to pay for my education in the UK.”

Lu Qiao: “Oh.”

Zhang Siyi didn’t like the awkward atmosphere, so he changed the topic: “The temperature in Osaka seems to be hotter than Haicheng. When the sun sets, do you think we will need a jacket? I don’t know if we are coming back to the hotel after dinner.”

Lu Qiao quickly went through his suitcase: “Hmm.”

As Zhang Siyi opened his luggage, a burst of fragrance permeated the air.

Lu Qiao was surprised again. Where has he smelled this odor before? His olfactory senses were very sensitive. Thinking back carefully, where was he…. When he was pushed into Gu Yu during the subway ride, Lu Qiao smelled the same fragrance.

In order to confirm his guess, when Zhang Siyi went to the toilet, Lu Qiao picked up his shirt hanging on the bed and sniffed it. It really was… and it wasn’t just pure detergent. There was also a unique woody fragrance mixed in.

Immediately, Lu Qiao thought of the scene he witnessed on the plane. Since Zhang Siyi was sitting relatively close with Gu Yu, would his fragrance transfer onto Zhang Siyi? Mulling it over, Lu Qiao ultimately decided that the origin of the smell couldn’t have been from light contact because the odor was much more intense.

Maybe they just use the same detergent and cologne? Lu Qiao thought…… Hey, these big boys, with perfume, tsk.

After Zhang Siyi came out of the restroom, he tied his lightweight jacket around his waist and walked downstairs with Lu Qiao.

Wearing sunglasses, Gu Yu was waiting for them downstairs expressionless. The moment he saw Zhang Siyi, a wide smile appeared. Zhang Siyi smiled happily in return.

Lu Qiao felt like he had been poisoned and couldn’t stop himself from watching them intently.

At nearly three in the afternoon, the first stop on the itinerary was the famous Umeda Sky Building. ** Built in 1993, the tower was the tallest building in the area of Osaka and had the best vantage point to see the city. It is said to be a sacred place for couples to show affection.

Since everyone decided they would rather visit the Umeda building at sunset, the group walked around the neighborhood for some time and happened upon a street lined with food stalls. Some people in the group felt that the meal on the plane was sufficient enough and thus were hungry at this time. The enticing smell of food made their hunger deepen.

In particular, Tao Fei was most eager to eat because he didn’t have his meal on the plane. Both of his eyes glazed over at the site of the delicious foodstuffs: “Brother! Let us eat something or we are going to starve to death!”

Since Gu Yu knew Tao Fei didn’t eat on the plane, he quipped: “Who was the one that caused his own starvation?”

Tao Fei touched his stomach: “But this is where the delicious food is!”

Since the company also paid for their meals, Gu Yu had to maintain a respectable budget. Hearing Tao Fei, people in the group nodded and increasingly stated their interest in having something to eat. Soon, everyone surrounded Gu Yu and collectively begged: “Boss, Pleeeeeease!”

Gu Yu checked the time. Although it wasn’t dinner time, it wasn’t so far off. Feeling helpless against the crowd, he relented: “You guys pick it out. This is not dinner so eat less.”

The crowd cheered: “Yeah!

Surveying the food stalls, many female colleagues ogled over the stall that was selling octopus balls. They were golden, round and juicy with more fat than usual. There were eight of them to a box and they were twice as big as the ones sold back home. Even though they were very enticing, the main reason the women wanted to purchase them was because the balls were sold in sets of eight. It was the perfect amount to split between two people and thus in-line with their company’s couples’ game.

Since there were many other people lined up to buy food at the same stall, it took twenty minutes to place the order for everyone.

As each received their box of octopus, the members of the group paired off and sat down to eat. Since the pairing were all male and female and because they were all wearing the company’s shirt, to an outsider, the group appeared to be some sort of tour for honeymooners. With that line of thought, the group exuded a sweet aura and many people passing by looked at them enviously.

Even though they knew it was all fake, the group’s happiness increased without them realizing it. This was exactly what they wanted to achieve!

However, there are two non-standard same-sex couples in the mix…… It’s an awkward situation.

Chapter 155: Osaka Part I

Not long after, the flight attendant walked through the cabin and started distributing meals. Since Tao Fei was napping, Lu Qiao gave him a few nudges to wake him and eventually, Tao Fei raised the corner of his blindfold to see what was the matter. He said: “I’m not hungry, you can eat mine.”

Lu Qiao: “…”

In order to have enough extra money to send home each month to his family, Lu Qiao often ate very simply. The only opportunity he had to eat well balanced meals with meat were at the department dinners the company had each month. Seated in economy class, Lu Qiao didn’t think the food selection would be so luxurious. Seeing the tray of food before him, Lu Qiao was very surprised. There was a dish of cold Japanese-style noodles, sushi, fried chicken and a small cup of yogurt. Being able to eat two meals, Lu Qiao thought he won the lottery. Finally, his mood started to improve just a bit.

After eating, the flight attendant walked through the cabin to pick up the lunch trays and other garbage.  As their destination approached, the flight attendants once again walked through the cabin and gave each passenger an immigration card and baggage declaration form. The total voyage was less then three hours. The two countries were really quite close to one another.

The island that was the Kansai International Airport** was the work of the internationally renowned architect Renzo piano. The people at the window seats watched the small island in the distance become a thriving airport as the plane got ready on its approach to land.

Before leaving China, Gu Yu gave each group member a simplified version of Zhang Siyi’s itinerary that included all the names of the buildings that they expected to visit and Kansai Airport was the first.

Almost everyone in attendance was familiar with the airport as it was a building that architectural students would learn about in their coursework. Even so, seeing the island from above first hand was a totally different experience then learning about it in school and as a result, the group members couldn’t contain their excitement. The volume inside the cabin slowly rose as delighted gasps could be heard throughout the large group of passengers. The other passengers and staff members weren’t sure what all the ruckus was about.

Even though Zhang Siyi has traveled abroad many times, he was influenced by his peers and like a contagion, he also let out a few ‘AHs and OHs’ in his excitement.

Walking out of the plane and into the airport after a smooth landing, the group surveyed their surroundings and thought the Japanese environment felt both modern and strange.

Built in 1994, utilizing new materials and construction techniques, the Kansai Airport was deemed a technological masterpiece of the time. Twenty years later, although the steel structure and large glass panes have lost its innovation and uniqueness, the airport continues to be an impressive site.

Now that everyone at Borderless has arrived, the members were eager to express themselves:

“Renzo Piano is like a God!”

“I’ve read about this airport in university and finally I’m able to see the master’s work in my lifetime!”

“Great! I’m in Japan!”

“To be honest, I was upset at hearing our business tour this time was to visit Japan.”

No one knew who voiced their opinion, but once the remark was made, suddenly everyone quieted down in remembrance of the dreadful war of the past.

“I feel the same. I don’t like Japan very much.”

“Damn Japs, they bullied us so badly……”

“For the Nanjing people! We are all family!”

“The country can’t forget!”

The more the group taunted and ridiculed, the worse the mood and attitudes of the people were becoming. Gu Yu stopped them and said: “We are here visiting Japan to look at various architectural sites for the purpose of education, not because of politics. Everyone should be mindful of history but also think about it rationally.”

Tong Heyi echoed Gu Yu and advised everyone: “I agree with Director Gu. If architecture is regarded as pure art, then art has no national boundaries. If you don’t like Japan, don’t buy Japanese goods, especially the Japanese toilet. By all means, you can return to China right now.”

As the crowd laughed Child Labor’s joke, the moment of resentment passed as bother group leaders redirected the group’s emotions. The gloom that enveloped them had lifted.

“We came to “little Japan” with the mindset that it would be a bad place, but reality proved contradictory. Since no one had the heart to admit it, instead we mocked and made up reasons to convince ourselves otherwise. Heh.”

All sorts of chuckles, snorts, and laughter could be heard from the large group. Someone raised their voice above the commotion: “If that’s the case, what’s the difference between fake news in the media and self-deception? Let’s be realistic and seek the truth. What is good, is good. What is not good, is bad.”

“Yes. That’s right. We have to be tolerant Chinese.”

“To be an enlightened architect!”

Gu Yu laughed and interrupted everyone: “Ok, stop thinking about it. We only need to look at the buildings. Let’s take a picture. Where is Zhang Siyi?”

Everyone in the group looked around and realized that Zhang Siyi wasn’t with them.

Frowning in worry, Gu Yu looked beyond the group of company members and easily saw Zhang Siyi wearing the company’s red T-shirt not far away. He was holding out a measuring tape up to the large glass pane.

Everyone: “…”

Gu Yu thought the predicament was rather ironic. He left the group to themselves and went over to him.

A colleague lamented: “Auntie Four really works hard.”

Grabbing the strap of his bag, Zhu Hongzhen lifted his bag onto his shoulder and said: “I have never seen him work so hard before!”

Yuan Zhicheng: “Is that the tape measure Director Gu gave him?”

Bi Lele: “Yeah, I remember Ji Feiyu spoke about it briefly. It was a tape measure that Gu Yu used as a student for many years.”

Zhu Hongzhen: “Aunt Four mentioned it once. He said the Boss gave it to him for his birthday.”

In fact, what everyone found surprising wasn’t the tape measure itself as it held no value, but the key point was because it was given as a birthday present. They couldn’t imagine Gu Yu would ever give a birthday present to a subordinate. Zhang Siyi’s special treatment strikes again!

Many in the group expressed feelings of jealousy and envy. Du Rui suddenly spoke out: “Is it just me, or does it seem like Aunt Four has been greatly influenced by Gu Yu’s shadow at work?”

Deep in contemplation, the group remained silent. Yes. From when was it? Zhang Siyi has improved tremendously, especially in these last few months when he and Tao Fei worked together on the resort project. His temperament has also matured and calmed down as compared to when he first started working at the company last year.

Even now, when everyone else was still thinking about having fun in Japan, Zhang Siyi was already invested in the real task of the business trip; to learn.

In order to gain Zhang Siyi’s attention to come back to the group, Gu Yu walked closer and signaled to him. When he rejoined the group, he took a photograph of them and then continued walking alongside Gu Yu.

Zhang Siyi opened a discussion: “After graduation last year, I went to France with Heartless Han and visited the Pompidou Center**. Renzo Piano also had a part in its design. With all of the exposed steel tubing, when I first saw the building, I thought it was really ugly. It’s no wonder why some critics called it a steel monster or a refinery. Contrary to its exterior, the building is actually a famous museum. I also told Heartless Han that Renzo Piano is definitely a non-mainstream pioneer. Heh.”

Smiling, Gu Yu pointed to him: “You can’t evaluate a building from the outside alone. You also have to consider the time frame it was built. In 1969 when the Pompidou Center was conceptualized, what was going on during that time? Europe was still recovering from World War II when the world was still in a state of doubt. The architectural style of Paris was the same gothic and rococo styles. Why did the decision-makers pick the design from Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers out of the seven hundred from all over he globe? In my opinion, it is not so much a design maverick flaunting an alternative, but a design that represents the future development of Paris. By leaving the past behind and moving forward, the decision-makers wanted to make a statement that brings hope to the people with a symbol of inclusion. Therefore, it is certainly unreasonable to say that architecture is completely separate from politics and history.”

Listening thoughtfully, Zhang Siyi realized in school, he hadn’t normally considered the time frame in which buildings were built. Mostly, he simply memorized things for his exams. Now with Gu Yu’s explanation, he became aware of the need to consider the relevant politics and events during the period that something was built.

It was no wonder that Tao Fei and Gu Yu read so many books during their undergraduate studies. Even if the reason behind reading those topics weren’t understood at the time, it was necessary to read a variety of philosophy and history books in order to gain insight about the different views and ideas that people had across the world. With maturity, one could break through boundaries and surpass ordinary people. There are those on the internet that say the best architects were either crazy or Zen Masters.

At this time in the Kansai International Airport, Zhang Siyi looked up at the masterpiece from twenty years ago and felt his own lack of ability and knowledge.
