Chapter 29: The Turnaround After Defeat

After the audition began, including Yin Chang and Wang Chen, there were a total of five stars that were present who entered the studio. Compared to the average person, they were dazzling, but compared to each other, it was clear who stood out among them at a glance. There was no comparison. Yin Chang’s overall image blew the others out of the water, including Wang Chen.

A lot could be understood by a person’s posture and dress. Especially in the entertainment industry, public image is key to success. It stands to reason that Wang Chen, growing up in a very affluent home and thus access to privileges normal people do not, should be able to stand out above the rest.  However, standing side by side, no one seemed to outshine the other until Yin Chang entered the room. For once, they felt just average.

Moreover, with blond dyed hair, three studded earrings on his left ear, and loose-fitted clothes, Wang Chen’s overall image was similar to K-Pop idols. Compared to Yin Chang, with his black hair and black fitted trousers and shirt, Wang Cheng felt like an internet star, not a celebrity.

However, apart from Wang Chen, the other models present were mentally prepared to have a supporting role. Wang Chen was not. Since he debuted as this year’s “Absolute Idol”, he was expected to be the main character of a story. His limelight was stolen once Yin Chang appeared out of nowhere.

Fortunately, Wang Chang could maintain his professionalism. Even if he burned with anger in the pit of his stomach, he still smiled like a spring breeze.

After introductions, each of the models put on a VI watch and went on-set to take photographs according to the photographer’s direction. As soon as the digital photos were reviewed, Wang Chen and Yin Chang looked similar. It’s no wonder. Wang Chen had more experience than Yin Chang and knows how best to express his good side. The most crucial factor was, the quality of the photographs and their commercial value were the same.

After each session with one of the models, the set of photos were sent to a production team for simple color correction, then passed to a panel of judges in the next room. Sitting in the center of the room, the art director, Luca, watched as the images were projected one by one onto a big screen. On either side, the other managers sat close by, all discussing the photographs.

“I think Wang Chen’s solo photos were very expressive.”

“Yes, especially when he laughs. He feels sunny and energetic; a perfect reflection of the youthful style we are looking for.”

“Compared with Wang Chen, Yin Chang’s overall image doesn’t match the brand.”

“Agreed. His all-black attire makes him look too formal and cold.”

“Well, although he’s not as youthful as Wang Chen, there is a sense of sophistication depicted in the photographs.”

“I also feel that way. The market price for the K-series is higher, right? I feel like it suits him more.”

Manager Xie couldn’t help but look at Luca and ask: “Luca, what do you think?”

From the beginning, as if he had ignored the discussion around him, Luca didn’t say a word. Crossing his arms, he sat watching every photograph very carefully as they went by. Hearing what Manager Xie asked, he raised his hand and made a gesture of peace and quiet. Afterwards, he continued to stare at the screen.

The atmosphere in the discussion room suddenly became very serious. Several of the managers stopped their discussion and instead, offered a brief summary about each of the models as they appeared on the screen.

After Luca reviewed all of the photos a dozen more times, he lowered his hand to pick out two models. Of the five, Wang Chen and Yin Chang were chosen. “You mentioned these two in your emails, right?”

The marketing manager immediately replied: “Yes. We were more inclined to choose Wang Chen. He is the boy with light blond hair.”

While putting the printed image down, Luca nodded and motioned to the staff to replay Wang Chen’s series of photographs. He slowly commented: “His photographs are very good. VI watch matches his style very well. However, his image is too prominent, making them too personal. Our watch is just an accessory; a decoration that can easily be substituted by something else.

Luca’s evaluation made those who support Wang Chen feel a little surprised.

Luca glanced down at Wang Chen’s information again and said: “Maybe this person is more famous in your country and currently has better commercial power in the market. In order to make a final decision, this also has to be considered in combination with your suggestions.”

Having positive feedback in favor of Wang Chen to report back, his marketing team and manager breathed a sigh of relief.

Manager Xie anxiously asked: “What about Yin Chang?”

The staff replaced Wang Chen photo with Yin Chang photograph and projected his images on the screen. Luca looked up and said: “He’s perfect.”

Everyone: “…” Perfect? With such a sudden a high evaluation, will Yin Chang be directly selected?

“….And he pays great attention to detail.” Luka thought of the young man who he met that just folded his towel after washing his hands in the bathroom, with appreciation.

“He’s wearing black clothes today with only gems on his cuffs as embellishments. Then to match, he chose a sea-blue watch to use in the photographs. Because of the black background, our eyes are drawn to the blue colored areas of the image at a glance – like the watch on his wrist.”

Except for Luca’s high praise of Yin Chang, everyone was quiet. Those who supported Wang Chen already felt defeated in their hearts.

Shaking his head with regret, Luca suddenly commented: “But, he is so beautiful.”

Everyone: “???” What do you mean?

Luca elaborated: “No matter how deliberate we try to tone him down, a voyeur will always be drawn to his person. They will want to know more about him personally. As someone just mentioned, Yin Chang is too sophisticated.”

All  of the managers in the room turned their heads to look at one another in confusion. Only Manager Xie had the courage to speak up: “Senior, isn’t that a good thing?”

Luca lamented: “He made me feel like our watches weren’t worthy of him.”

Everyone: “…” Because the preferred spokesperson was too refined and the products were too cheap – what kind of distorted evaluation is this? Even so, no matter how sophisticated he might appear, Yin Chang was young and new to the industry.

Trembling, Manager Xie hesitantly asked: “So, do you think Yin Chang is an inappropriate choice?”

Luca was also conflicted and couldn’t make a choice. He looked at the files of the two once more and asked, “Isn’t there some filming in the afternoon for a commercial? I will decide after the rough-cut is completed.”

At noon, the public relations department of VI arranged a catered lunch for the models. While they were eating, Manager Xie excused herself from the table and signaled Yao Manhuai to follow her to the bathroom. Quietly they talked: “I’m not confident that Yin Chang will be the spokesperson.”

Yao Manhuai frowned: “Why do you say that?”

Manager Xie: “Our artistic director thought Yin Chang was too sophisticated and didn’t match VI brand image.”

Even though Yao Manhuai has been in this business for a very long time, it is the first time she has heard of such an evaluation…..

“But Luca’s personal opinion of Yin Chang is very high and he may change his mind when he sees Yin Chang act this afternoon during the filming.”

Yao Manhuai nodded. She was afraid of affecting Yin Chang’s state of mind so she didn’t tell him about her discussion after she returned to lunch.

In reality, Yin Chang advantage was only in taking photos as he had some exposure during his photo shoots for the magazine and fashion shoots. Whether it was for a commercial or something else, he had no experience acting.

Looking through the script lying on the desk, Yin Chang didn’t know how to interpret the action of ‘while slowly putting on the watch, express intoxication and enjoyment’. In addition, he was to touch his arm and close his eyes. The scene seemed rather embarrassing.

When filming, Yin Chang was rather stiff. In contrast, Wang Chen’s performance was much better and the effect was obvious.

In the end, the combined opinions of all the judges of VI decided to let Wang Chen be their new spokesperson for the next two years.

When the marketing manager went to give Wang Chen the good news, Wang Chen stood up with great pride. Any grievances he suffered today because of Yin Chang were swept away in an instant. Just as he had felt during his recently won championship, Absolute Idol, he felt like he was standing in the limelight. The guy named Yin Chang could only stand in his shadow behind him feeling jealous…..

What about being  more handsome? What about popularity? In the end, everything depends on your own ability! Hahaha…

Thanking the stars for their time to audition, several other staff members of VI company filed into the room. In addition to their participation compensation, they also prepared a splendid dinner party, intending to invite everyone to enjoy it.

Last in the group was Luca who was looking around for someone in the crowded room.

Obviously, Wang Chen also inquired about Luca’s origins through his own manager and knew that the art director was the main voice in the selection process. He straightened his clothes, raised a confident smile, and wanted to go over to solemnly thank the discerning art director for his choice.

Unexpectedly, Luca’s gaze passed directly over him, looking at Yin Chang behind him. Singularly focused, he ignored Wang Chen and walked straight to Yin Chang: “Hello, Yin Chang.”

Yin Chang: “Hi…” Huh? The foreigner who I met in the bathroom?

“I’m the artistic director of VI, Luca,” he said and smiled gently: “I’m sorry I didn’t choose you today.”

He was speaking in English and was afraid that Yin Chang wouldn’t understand him. He had waved his own translator over to relay what he was saying, but before he had the chance to do so, Yin Chang answered Luca in unaccented, fluent English. “Ah, It’s ok.”

After filming the commercial, Yin Chang was mentally prepared to lose the deal. Not being arrogant, he has a very good attitude and tolerance towards defeat.

Luca’s eyes lit up when he heard him speak English, and continued: “But I wanted to tell you, it’s not that you weren’t good enough, but that VI is not suitable for you. Our high luxury BG brand is preparing to launch an elite watch in the second half of the year.  The grade and price of that watch are much higher than VI. I want you to be the brand ambassador for it. Would you be willing to accept the offer?”

Carefully listening, Yin Chang nodded. At the end, he was caught off guard: “This….” and looked to Yao Manhuai for consultation.

Yao Manhuai, who was also good in English, understood Luca’s meaning and immediately came forward: ”Hello Luca, I’m Yin Chang’s agent Samantha, and we are very happy to accept this invitation and very honored to do so.”

  ……

Using his finger, Wang Chen hurriedly poked the agent next to him: “What are they talking about?”

Given Wang Chen’s background and resources, the manager he was assigned to by the company was naturally fluent in English. After hearing the conversation between Luca and Yin Chang, she was stunned: “Luca invited him to be the face of the latest BG watch…..”

After listening to her translation, everyone in the room was dumbfounded.

…… BG? The watch that’s worth tens of thousands!?

They really plan on inviting a newcomer like Yin Chang to be the young spokesperson! ? ? Σ( ° △°)︴

Wang Chen: “……!!!” Fuck! What the hell is this ! ! (╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻

Chapter 28: Watch Endorsement

On the following day, Lu Lingxuan sent Yin Chang some information about VI watches.

VI is a newer brand under the well-known luxury maker Swiss Watch Group. In the past, for over thirty years, SWG focused on traditional mechanical watches for elite customers. Only recently, five years ago, has SWG established VI as a brand aimed at a younger generation.

Although the label of the brand VI is “Luxury, Fashion”, it has nothing to do with wealth or status. The product represents young peoples’ aspirations to lead a wealthy lifestyle and thus, compared to the price of a traditional SWG watch, the price of SWG’s VI was greatly reduced.

In addition, SWG wanted a young spokesperson for their VI brand and in the beginning, Mi Xiu was chosen. Now that her contract was about to expire, VI started looking for new candidates. Like Wang Chen, Mi Xiu was also a winner of the show ‘Absolute Idol’ and as a result, VI sought Wang Chen to be their spokesperson.

……Until Yin Chang appeared. Whether it was the turmoil relating to his father, or his recent fashion photographs, Yin Chang caught everyone’s attention as soon as he returned to China. His popularity on the internet soared.

Wanting to understand his desicion, Yao Manhuai called Yin Chang and asked: “Are you interested in the product?”

At the time of the call, Yin Chang was at home unpacking the clothes he had sent back from abroad — “Not really. I just learned about it.” He had to empty and pack away his father’s large walk-in closet before he had the chance to put away his own clothes.

Yin Chang has heard of the luxury watch maker SWG. Indeed, it is an internationally renowned brand but, VI was specifically launched for the Chinese market. According to Lu Lingxuan, SWG marketing was extensive and by now, everyone in China was aware of VI watches. Since Yin Chang was living abroad, he didn’t have exposure to the brand.

Yao Manhuai asked: “Then why would you want to compete for this spot?”

Of course, Yin Chang didn’t want to admit his interest in the brand was sparked by the events that transpired at school; how Wang Chen’s demeaning remarks about himself had caused Shao Junling to punch his nephew. He made an excuse: “I was just curious about it.”

Yao Manhuai: “Well…… If you go, Wang Chen will probably misunderstand your reasons. He might think you are trying to steal his contract.”

Setting his clothes down and pausing, Yin Chang asked: “They haven’t decided on a spokesperson yet, have they? How can I be stealing his contract?”

Yao Manhuai responded: “I heard that they already had picked Wang Chen. If you don’t go, the endorsement is his.”

Yin Chang continued folding his clothes: “That means they now think I’m a more suitable spokesperson than he is. But they don’t want any potential legal complications to incur from dropping him at the last minute since it’s an embarrassment and insult.”

Yao Manhuai was shocked. Understanding the deeper issue, she was surprised at how much insight the boy had.

She laughed and asked: “If that’s the case, aren’t you going to just embarrass him?”

Yin Chang got up and leaned against the cabinet. He calmly replied: “I don’t know him at all. Why should I have to protect him? If the situation was reversed, he wouldn’t be protecting me. Anyway, it’s just an audition. One has only to rely on their skills.”

Yao Manhuai: “……”It makes sense. But, is there really no connection between them?

However, now that she knew his train of thought, Yao Manhuai didn’t hesitate anymore. Her risk-taking nature that thrived on excitement spurred her on. She happily said: “Ok. I’ll set it up.”

Yin Chang asked her: “What’s the difference between an endorsement audition and a magazine photo audition? Is there something specific I need to prepare in advance?”

Yao Manhuai explained: “Apart from a 15-second commercial, everything else is the same as the magazine photo shoots you are familiar with. Make sure to rest well the day before the audition so you will be better prepared mentally. Feel confident and don’t be nervous. I’ll handle the public relations team.”

After she hung up the phone, Yin Chang stood still mulling the situation over. Although he wanted to compete for the contract, he wasn’t sure it was a good idea, let alone what was necessary to win. To be fair, Yin Chang doesn’t have any acting experience….. In any case, just do your best!

In a blink of an eye, it was Friday. Yin Chang woke up early and took extra care to groom himself. He chose a Burberry black shirt to wear and black trousers. When he looked in the mirror, he felt like something was missing. With minimal accessories, he added two blue sapphire cufflinks to his shirt, nothing else.

Afterwards he went with Lu Lingxuan to his workplace and swapped to a business car then headed towards VI’s audition site at the Royal Hotel. Since the occasion was important, Yao Manhuai was also there. Upon their arrival at the hotel, VI’s public relations and marketing managers came out to greet Yin Chang in person and enthusiastically took him to a private dressing room.

“Thank you so much for coming!” The manager of the public relations department, Mrs. Xie, said. She was a refined woman about the same age as Yao Manhuai.

Maybe it was because the meeting was set up in advance, but Yin Chang didn’t know why the marketing manager took Yao Manhuai to the side and talked to her in private. “Since there was a sudden change and two of our favorite stars were here to audition, we reported the circumstance to headquarters. Yesterday, in order to attend the audition, the Art Director of VI took a flight from Switzerland to China. He will be here soon.”

“Oh?” Yao Manhuai asked: “What kind of person is the art director?”

Manager Xie explained: “The Art Director is a 42-year-old man native of Switzerland named Luca. Previously, he was the watch designer of BG brand. After the auditions have concluded, all of the department managers, including myself will make the decision. However, I know that you won’t win over the marketing department’s head. They have already talked to Wang Chen in private. I don’t know which direction the other departments lean, but Luca has a large say in the matter so there are many variables still.”

Yao Manhuai asked: “Does he have any preferences?”

Manager Xie lowered her voice and said: “I heard that he’s a stickler for detail and a perfectionist. Last year, VI release a style series called GR10. He noticed the position of the diamond on the dial to be off by 1mm. The fault lay with the design drawing. He recalled all of the watches to redo….”

Yao Manhuai nodded thoughtfully, and asked: “Was it possible for him to be involved with Wang Chen’s public relations?”

Manager Xie shook her head: “I don’t think it’s possible. If he was already involved, he wouldn’t have flown over here from Switzerland in person. After all, the contract was originally negotiated for Wang Chen. But because there was some dispute, Luca came for the meeting to settle the issue.”

Yao Manhuai made an “OK” gesture.

Manager Xie smiled and said to Yao Manhuai: “I was undecided, but after seeing Yin Chang, the shock to my heart… Yin Chang’s appeal is much better in person than in the photos. To be honest, I think there is a hope for him yet.”

Yao Manhuai felt relieved when she heard this. She too felt the same shock and it was precisely for this reason that she tried every means available to her to bring Yin Chang into the entertainment industry. It would be a pity for everyone if Yin Chang remained unnoticed.

After resting briefly, a professional makeup artist came into Yin Chang’s dressing room to do his makeup. However, to her surprise, there was little to be done since Yin Chang’s skin was so pale and flawless. The foundation itself would make his skin worse. In the end, she chose a simple hairstyle along with a small amount of eye shadow. The simple application would help balance his color and define his eyes to prevent Yin Chang from becoming washed-out under the stark lights of the photography set.

As soon as she finished putting on his makeup, Lu Lingxuan came in and said, “There are a few candidates next door. They want to come over and say hello to you. Is that okay?”

Yin Chang was taken aback: “Yes.”

It turns out, not only did VI invite Yin Chang and Wang Chen, but also many B-listers of several other companies. Presumably, to obscure the direct competition that Wang Chen had with Yin Chang.

While some were led inside by their agents and some were not, several people arrived, all of whom are outstanding models. Even though their personal image was excellent, the competitive nature of the entertainment industry demanded more from someone then looks alone. Even if they had talent, a person’s popularity determines everything.

They measured up Yin Chang with stares of curiosity and some did not hide their envious gazes.

Yin Chang shook hands with each of them. Seeing that Yin Chang had a good attitude, one of them boldly asked: “Can I friend you on social media?”

“…… All right.” Yin Chang replied. Knowing that Lu Lingxuan operatedr his main social media page, he commented: “I can’t on my Weibo account, but you can text me through WeChat.”

Everyone: “???” Is he fucking real?

When they left his dressing room, the B-listers were flattered. After all, Yin Chang’s current popularity has already left them in the dust.

Little star A: “Damn, I really added…”

Little star B: “Why is he so different? His photos make him seem like the very cold type.”

Little Star C: “The real person is so handsome and gentle. I feel like I’ve become his brother-in-law…”

As several people were discussing their thoughts, Wang Chen arrived accompanied by his agent. One of them was a contemporary of Wang Chen who also participated in “Absolute Idol”. As soon as he saw him, he greeted him enthusiastically: “Wang Chen!”

Wang Chen came over and shook his hand then smiled and asked: “Are you here for the audition too?”

Of course, the man knew that he couldn’t compare with Wang Chen. He was a little embarrassed and said: “Well, I just came over to gain some experience.”

Wang Chen: “What were you talking about just now?”

“Yin Chang!” He said excitedly. “Yin Chang is in there. We just went over to meet him and he friended us on WeChat!”

Wang Chen’s expression was a little unnatural. He glanced at the agent next to him, questioning. His agent encouraged him: “Since we will all be in the same circle from now on, let’s take the initiative to say hello? “

As soon as he had spoken, Yin Chang and Lu Lingxuan arrived.

As Yin Chang and Wang Chen’s gaze met, an invisible electric current ran between them in the air. Neither of them said anything.

Quickly, Wang Chen put on a professional smile and went straight up to Yin Chang and kindly offered: “Hello, I’m Wang Chen.”

Yin Chang also introduced himself to him politely and that was it.

Wang Chen was waiting for Yin Chang to ask him for his social media account. Instead, Yin Chang was looking away from time to time and seemed a little absent-minded.

In an effort to resolve the awkward moment, Wang Chen’s agent rushed over to the rescue and said: “Yin Chang, I’m glad to meet you. Wang Chen has been watching you for a long time. Would you like to friend each other on social media? You can text each other in the future….”

Yin Chang smiled politely: “Thank you. Let my agent know. I’m really sorry, but I need to go use the bathroom now.”

He made an apologetic gesture then gracefully turned and walked away leisurely. Watching his unhurried gait, why didn’t his attitude match his actions?

Wang Chen’s agent: “…”

Lu Lingxuan: …”

Wang Chen: “……”

Not far from them, extras A, B, and C “…”

Yin Chang really did go to the restroom, but only to wash his hands. There was some hairspray on them that he wanted to wash off.

As he was in a good mood now, he couldn’t help humming a catchy tune that his vocal teacher taught him a while ago.

While humming, there next to him appeared a middle-aged foreigner who was about the same height as him. The gentleman was also washing his hands and while he was washing his hands over and over again, he was looking over at Yin Chang through the mirror frequently.

Yin Chang happily smiled at the other person and offered a greeting: “Hi!”

The foreigner was taken aback for a moment before smiling and returning the greeting: “Hi….”

After washing his hands, Yin Chang picked up a towel from the table and dried his hands carefully. Once complete, before turning around and leaving, he folded the towel up precisely and put it gently in the ‘used towel’ bin.

ONE:

Wang Chen scolded his agent in the dressing room angrily: “Why did you tell him that I have been following him for a long time!”

Agent: “Don’t you often check his Weibo homepage?”

Wang Chen: “I didn’t! I just stumbled on it by accident!”

Agent: “Okay.. You didn’t…..”

The agent comforted him: “I’ll just have to contact his agent for you.”

Wang Chen: “…” Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! ! !

TWO:

After watching Yin Chang’s attitude towards Wang Chen, the other celebrities were gossiping in the corner.

Little Star A: “He actually had that kind of attitude toward Wang Chen!”

Little Star B: “Is he a fool? This attribute will inadvertently offend many people in the future! ”

Little Star C: “But why do I feel so special?”

The Perfect Relationship by Xi He Qing Ling

Chapter 27: Xue Zi’s Background

Without hearing a “thank you”, Shao Junling, this bear cub, didn’t answer Yin Chang in the way he was expecting and thus, once again, pissed Yin Chang off. Silently, in order to calm himself down, Yin Chang recited a mantra to himself ‘he is just a child, he is just a child…..’

Begrudgingly, Yin Chang left two of the boxes of toys open for Shao Junling to look through while he quietly began to move his personal belongings to the master bedroom.

After lunch, Shao Junling couldn’t wait to play with his new toys. As he played happily, Yin Chang continued to unpack his belongings. Yesterday’s emotional hardship effected Yin Chang more than he realized. It wasn’t before long that fatigue set in and he went into his bedroom to take a nap.

Since the bedroom door wasn’t shut all the way, Yin Chang was able to hear Shao Junling quietly playing with his toys in the other room. Knowing that someone was nearby reassured Yin Chang and gave him a peace of mind. Soon, the soft click-clack of Shao Junling’s playing lulled him to sleep.

As he had heard when he fell asleep, when Yin Chang woke up in the bright room, he heard the same soft sounds of Shao Junling playing coming from the other room. Feeling unmotivated, he remained in his bed motionless. Vaguely, he felt something cool on his hand and recalled the place Shao Junling bit him.

Squinting his eyes, he raised his hand to take a look. Yin Chang was stunned.

…… This snake-like blob of white-guck on his hand… What is it?

Frowning, he brought his hand closer to sniff. He could smell the familiar minty odor of toothpaste.

“…………”

Except for the two on them, there weren’t others here. The person who put toothpaste on his hand was self-evident. When did he come into his room? Was Yin Chang sleeping so soundly that he didn’t feel anything at all?

Annoyed at having toothpaste on his hand, but amused at Shao Junling’s attempt at first-aid, Yin Chang sat up smiling and went to the bathroom to wash it off. He noticed Shao Junling sitting in the living room playing with his new Jurassic World toys with as much focus as he had yesterday.

Folding his arms across his chest, Yin Chang leaned against the doorframe for a while and watched him play. Then, he walked straight over and reached out to ruffle Shao Junling’s hair for a moment before walking away.

Shao Junling: “……”

Even though Yin Chang felt like Shao Junling was just causing him trouble, yesterday’s events proved to him that communication was key to their relationship. As long as they talked to one another and worked out their differences, their relationship would get better slowly and as a result, would naturally grow closer.

In the evening, Yin Chang received a message from Teacher Lin: “How is Shao Junling doing? Is he ok?”

After being called to school twice in a row, Yin Chang asked Teacher Lin to communicate matters concerning Shao Junling directly to him through a texting App on his phone called WeChat.

From across the room, he secretly took a photo of Shao Junling’s back while he was playing with his toys and sent it to the chat group. “He is well.” After yesterday’s events and Yin Chang’s realization about Shao Junling communication impediment, he informed Teacher Lin of his thoughts. Of course, he skipped the part about him running away and hiding for the day.

All morning, they chatted and Teacher Lin was concerned. His teacher hadn’t thought of the possibility that Shao Junling had a speech impediment. Although she didn’t have the means to verify it right now, she was going to take it under consideration.

At first, when Teacher Lin saw Shao Junling history, she was worried that the adoptive family wouldn’t get too involved in his life and thus, impact his education and upbringing. She didn’t expect Yin Chang to be such responsible teenager that he would take care of his brother to such an extent. In the chat group, she gave a thumbs up and praised Yin Chang for being a good brother.

Teacher Lin also informed Yin Chang that she would talk to his tutor to facilitate a plan that would incorporate additional school work that involved speaking to help Shao Junling the most. At the same time, she suggested Yin Chang buy a variety of children’s books and read with him during the weekends. Yin Chang should help him read the words and make sure Shao Junling is pronouncing them correctly. With his brother’s involvement, this method should help Shao Junling improve the fastest.

Since Teacher’s Lin’s suggestion made perfect sense, Yin Chang immediately bought dozens of children’s books for Shao Junling online. Shao Junling’s eyes widened in surprise once the many boxes of books arrived at home. While outwardly he remained quiet, inwardly he thought, was it possible to read so many books?

When he came home on Saturday, Yin Chang was eager to find common ground with Shao Junling. His few attempts at conversation fell short as Shao Junling was singularly focused on playing with his new toys. Noticing how distracted he really was, throughout the weekend, Yin Chang didn’t bother Shao Junling any longer. He only attended to his basic needs.

Before bringing Shao Junling back to school, Yin Chang packed him a lunch and included a couple of cupcakes that he baked. One was for him to eat and the other was for him to give to the boy he fought with, Xue Zi.

However, when Yin Chang brought this up, Shao Junling didn’t want to listen. “NO! I don’t give!”

Since he was already informed of the facts, Yin Chang already had an idea of why Shao Junling was so unwilling. Even so, he continued: “Why not? If you hurt someone, so you have to apologize.”

Scrunching up his face, Shao Junling replied: “He bad! He say you are not good.”

Yin Chang: “He doesn’t know me so why would he say that I’m not good?”

Shao Junling: “He listened to uncle. What he said.”

Yin Chang explained: “He is just repeating what his uncle said before finding out for himself. I bet, if he knew I was your brother he would come talk to you first and ask you for proof. I don’t think he knows I’m your brother. If he had, I think he wouldn’t have said those things.”

Under Yin Chang’s spell, Shao Junling listened with rapt attention and was easily persuaded.

Since Xue Zi was only an eight-year-old child, what Yin Chang assumed turned out to be the heart of the matter. Like what his uncle had done, the problem lay on the people who spread false rumors by making criticisms without knowing the actual person first.

Yin Chang gave the cupcakes to him and said: “All right, don’t be stubborn. Give this to Xue Zi when you go to school today. Tell him that I baked them. You need to deal with your classmates properly and stop fighting with others. Ok?”

In opposition, Shao Junling bulged his cheeks angrily. Even so, soon he gave in and  reluctantly followed Yin Chang’s orders.

Upon his return to school, Shao Junling found Xue Zi as Yin Chang had requested. He handed him the cupcake without a trace of emotion.

Watching Shao Junling approach, Xue Zi instinctively took a defensive position. Although he put up a fierce attitude, he couldn’t help but step back. After all, Shao Junling had hit him twice.

Staring at him, Shao Junling put out his arm and said: “Here! Cake!”

As Xue Zi relaxed his own stance, he tentatively asked: “Why are you giving me a cupcake?”

Shao Junling: “My brother, for you.” He gruffly spat then turned away and left.

“???” In a daze, Xue Zi wondered, who’s your brother?

After dropping Shao Junling off at school, Yin Chang went to work. The interrupted photo shoot that was last Thursday was rescheduled for today. When he arrived at the company, he parked his car and met up with his agent, Lu Lingxuan. There, they switched vehicles to one of the company’s business cars and drove out of the parking garage.

On the way to the shoot, Yin Chang noticed a few copies of New People magazine lying in the car. He reached over for one and opened the magazine. In addition to his own photos, other rising stars were given articles. They were Yu Ruize, Xiao Xing, Yu Xiangrong, and Wang Chen.

When Yin Chang opened the section that depicted Wang Chen, he paused. While thinking about Shao Junling’s fight with Xue Zi, he took a closer look at the photographs. The similarity between Wang Chen and the boy was obvious. Wang Chen was probably his uncle.

However, Yin Chang wasn’t entirely sure. Sitting next to Lu Lingxuan, he turned his head towards her to ask: “Do you know who Wang Chen is?”

Lu Lingxuan: “Hmm…, Wang Chen. I know! He’s the same age as you. Recently, he’s been very popular.”

Yin Chang contemplated what he heard. He is the same age? An eighteen-year-old uncle?

Lu Lingxuan rarely witnessed Yin Chang worry about entertainment gossip. Immediately she picked up on his inquiry and using her professional knowledge, she enthusiastically began to talk about what she knew.

Wang Chen trained in an entertainment company in South Korea before returning to China earlier this year. Not long ago, on the current most popular reality-TV show, he was won the award, ‘Absolute Idol’.

Everyone in the industry knows that Wang Chen wasn’t as talented as some of the other newcomers. However, he comes from a strong background so his award wasn’t a surprise. He has an older sister, Wang Xuan, who was seventeen years his senior. In addition to hosting a well-known talk show from East Television, she also starred in a daytime drama. From the start, she was a success and became very famous. Early in her life, she married into a very wealthy family and gradually left the entertainment industry. With such connections, and financial security, it’s not difficult for Wang Xuan to turn her brother into a star.

Listening to her, Yin Chang confirmed his assumption. If Wang Chen really had a much older sister, then it wouldn’t be strange to have an eight-year-old nephew.

Yin Chang asked: “Is Wang Chen’s brother-in-law surnamed Xue?”

Lu Lingxuan looked at him in surprise and said excitedly: “How did you know? Wang Xuan married into the richest family in Haicheng. The Xue family!”

Yin Chang listened to Lu Lingxuan’s continued information about the various sons of the Xue family as well as Wang Xuan and Xue Qin’s wedding. She had a seemingly endless supply of gossip.

Yin Chang listened intently. It was fortunate that Dee International School was a very proper school and would take responsibility and thus, Yin Chang didn’t have to talk to the Xue Family directly. He was even less inclined to deal with the situation himself because he knew just how troublesome large, rich families could be.

Lu Lingxuan assumed he had seen Wang Chen’s show. Thinking he might want to get to know him, she offered brightly: “If you like, we can see if there are any upcoming events that the both of you could do as a collaboration. TV shows often invite multiple celebrities to boost their viewership like variety shows or maybe a cameo on a popular drama. Doing it together will help you get to know each other….”

Frowning slightly, Yin Chang was just about to refuse her, but Lu Lingxuan quickly followed up: “By the way, speaking of Wang Chen, we received an invitation from VI Watch. They are looking for a new spokesperson for their brand. Chief Mao said Wang Chen was already chosen, however, they inquired about you at the last minute and offered an opportunity to meet with you.”

“Oh?” Yin Chang suddenly became interested.

Lu Lingxuan explained: “It may be because your popularity is rising fast. All of the collaborations we have received are 100% in your favor. Why go to an audition when a contract had already been decided upon for someone else? You aren’t like Wang Chen. He’s already a veteran of three years in the industry while you are a newcomer. Since you can’t be selected by the brand, it’s a waste of your time so I didn’t tell you…..”

After listening to his assistant, Yin Chang felt a little uncomfortable. By nature, he isn’t a competitive person, but thinking about his recent troubles that may have been caused by Wang Chen, he felt compelled to meet him.

“Is there enough time still?” Yin Chang asked Lu Lingxuan.

“About what?” Lu Lingxuan said.

“The audition,” Yin Chang closed the magazine and threw it aside, “I want to meet with the brand.”

“Are you serious?” Lu Lingxuan was a little surprised.

Even though she has only been with Yin Chang for a short time, she has already understood the difference between them. Wang Chen is a second-generation star backed by his family. Although he is dedicated, he lacks ambition. For him, because his connections and opportunities were hand-outs by his family, he thought of them as just part of the job and nothing special. This was first time since Yin Chang started that he took the initiative to fight for an opportunity to endorse a brand.

“Well, if it isn’t too late, please make an appointment for me.” Yin Chang said.

That night, Lu Lingxuan replied to Yin Chang inquiry: “The appointment has been made. It’s at one o’clock next Friday afternoon and will be during the same time that Wang Chen will be there to photograph the watch. Do you think it is okay?”

Yin Chang: “Yes.”

The author has something to say: [Vignette]

ONE:

There weren’t sounds coming from Yin Chang’s bedroom. Shao Junling listened intently for any sense of movement. He went to see if his brother was dead. His brother was asleep and there were very obvious marks left  by his teeth on his hand.

Quickly, Shao Junling went to the washroom to get a tube of toothpaste then carefully applied it to his hand.

Before, Teacher Yin explained the importance of toothpaste and that it had anti-inflammatory properties. He gently squeezed some onto his hand to ease the swelling.

Shao Junling: Hmm… Today, I did a good job of following teacher’s directions! o( ̄ヘ ̄o)

TWO:

Shao Junling asked Xue Zi about the cake.

Despite Xue Zi handling the box with care, when he opened it, the cake was battered like someone had maliciously shaken the box. The icing was all over the place! Crying at the state of the cake, he ate it anyway for fear of Shao Junling beating him up again.. (Q︿Q)

But it tastes really good…..
