The Perfect Relationship by Xi He Qing Ling

Chapter 001: Accident

….. “On the morning of the 17th local time, a Boeing passenger plane crashed in an accident shortly after takeoff, killing all 137 passengers and eight crew members from 22 countries…… There were seven Chinese passengers on board, including the well-known Chinese actor Yin Dong……”

….. “When the airplane crashed was reported, refusing to believe the famous actor died, fans of Yin Dong gathered at the airport collectively crying in grief…..”

….. “It is reported that they were on their way to a movie set in Kenya. While the rest of the film crew had taken a different flight to their destination, Yin Dong and his assistant departed from Shanghai on the 16th and took a connecting flight in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.……”

    ***

….. “Oh my God! Did Yin Dong really die in a plane crash?”

….. “It’s a pity. I recently saw him star in the film, Thirty Years of the River. I never would have thought it was the last film he would be in!”

….. “It’s not April Fool’s day, is it? Yin Dong is my favorite movie star!”

    ***

At the airport, numerous people were holding their phones looking at the shocking news report. As the large flat screen TV that was broadcasting the latest news feeds came closer, a tall young man stopped outside the store and glanced at it. Like many others, he appeared to be shocked. Now confused and anxious, he continued along the concourse.

Upon arrival at the international customs desk, the youth took off his baseball cap and handed the man his passport. The security staff stared at him for a few seconds in question because, while they seemed to be able to tell who is was, the passport clearly had an unknown name on it.

Nearing the exit, the young man felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. When he answered, an urgent and loud voice was coming from the speaker: “Yin Chang, where are you? …The situation is a bit of an emergency. I don’t know who leaked your information back home. Now, numerous reporters are outside the airport and we are trying to arrange for a security escort….”

Since the signal came and went intermittently inside the airport building, Yin Chang didn’t hear much. He had stepped outside of the airport already.

Someone shouted, ‘there he is’, and with numerous flashing camera lights, the crowed rushed towards him, blocking his way.

“You are Yin Chang right?”

“Yin Dong’s plane has crashed. What are you feeling now?”

“Yin Dong has never disclosed your mother’s identity to the public. Are you his illegitimate son?”

“Did you come home overnight to settle his affairs? Did Yin Dong inform you of his properties and assets?”

“What do you think of your father’s sudden death at the height of his career? Will your quality of life decline in the future? Are you taking his place in his business and entering the entertainment industry?”

    ***

The young man being questioned was the only son of the movie star who just died in the plane crash, Yin Chang.

On the way home, almost everyone was talking about the news of the plane crash in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. Despite the different languages, one aspect was clearly repeated in his ear. The fact that his father, Yin Dong, was dead.

At this moment, facing the wolf-like reporter, Yin Chang didn’t know what he was feeling. They asked him things unceremoniously and without any reservation just to make a rise out of him: Indifference is heartless. Excessive anger is unacceptable. Grief is emotional collapse.

Since his response weren’t explosive enough, the reporters pressed him further and asked even more personal questions. Like a hungry locust swarm ravenously devouring all, the reporters were enjoying the feeding frenzy brought about by the death of Yin Dong.

Soon, Yin Cheng was surrounded by the flashing camera lights, not only by the reporters and their crew, but by regular people walking nearby. They also raised their phones to take part in the action and shoot photos.

Several female reporters stuck closely to him. Instinctively, Yin Chang wanted to protect himself from the crowd. When he was about to reach out to block them, a group of airport security came from behind and surrounded him all the while shouting at the reporters: “Back! Stand back! “

“Mr. Yin, there’s no way out from here. Please come with us…”

The chaos lasted for more than twenty minutes before the security guards were able to take Yin Chang away from the airport exit and bring him to an exclusive lounge inside.

Moments later, a man and a woman came in. Wiping sweat from his brow, the man bowed and apologized: “I’m really sorry. We didn’t know what the situation was like at the airport. The arrangements weren’t made properly in advanced. You must be shocked and frightened!”

Indeed, Yin Chang was shocked. He had been out with his father in the past, but due to his father’s protection, he never had the experience of being besieged after being recognized by fans.

From near the doorway, the other woman stared at Yin Chang unabashedly. At the urging of the man, she pulled out a mask and sunglasses from a bag. Blushing, she handed them to him and said: “We can leave the airport out of the special exit in a few minutes. There might be a few reporters in the underground parking lot. To be safe, try not to get photographed.”

Yin Chang answered with a muddleheaded reply: “I know.”

In order to arm yourself against a paparazzi, Yin Chang had long been accustomed to this type of disguise. However, he did not expect that one day, he would become the main character.

    ***

Half an hour later, in the general manager’s office of Nova Entertainment, Yao Manhuai received an intercom call from the public relations department.

“Chief Yao, open social media and look at the news feed!”

Yao Manhuai refreshed the entertainment section and saw several articles related to Yin Chang in the hot topics.

….. “Yin Dong was killed and his son Yin Chang returned home overnight

….. “Yin Chang shows up at the Airport”

…..  “News Flash: Who is Yin Chang? Nine photos to show you: he is the only son of the famous movie actor.”

    ***

As it turned out, the turmoil that Yin Chang experienced at the airport was uploaded to major news platforms by those journalists at the scene.

Ms. Yao furrowed her brow and frowned. She was well aware of the type of public pressure in the entertainment industry. Not wanting him to experience unnecessary additional trauma from the reporters, she specially arranged help for Yin Chang to get safely and secretively away from the airport.

But, how long did it take from the moment he got off the plane to appear on social media? ‘Yin Chang at the airport’ was on the hot topic search list!

Yao Manhuai immediately contacted the airport crew to inquire about the status quo and learned he was safe. She pinched the bridge of her nose and exhaled. Picking up her phone, she dialed the number for the public relations department not only to inform them of the events today, but to tell them to keep a close eye on public opinion from social media.

After hanging up, she looked at a recent photo taken of Yin Chang from airport that was displayed on the computer screen. As Yin Dong’s business partner and agent for many years, Yao Manhuai had certainly met Yin Chang.

When she first met Yin Chang, he was only four years old. Under Yin Dong’s guidance, he obediently called her Aunt Yao. No one could resist his soft voice and sweet smile. He was simply loved.

A year later, when Yin Dong became famous, in order to create a comfortable learning environment for his son, he sent him away to study abroad.

Any time Yin Dong was out of the country for work, he would try to make time to see Yin Chang. As his agent, Yao Manhuai was also present. Once she jokingly asked Yin Dong whether or not he was interested in getting Yin Chang involved in the entertainment industry. She had absolute confidence that Yin Chang would become more famous than him. Yin Dong only smiled at her and said, since he’s too young, he would let Yin Chang choose when he grows up.

Later, Ms. Yao set up her own agency. As they became busier with their respective jobs, the time spent together was less. The last time she saw Yin Chang on the news was three years ago when his trip with his father was exposed by the entertainment circle.

That year, Yin Dong took Yin Chang to Norway for a holiday. In the image, the fifteen-year-old was wearing a tight ski suit that emphasized his maturing athletic body and good looks. The images taken in the past were far less clear than the airport photos from today, but even so, they caused a brief uproar online. Yin Dong had spoken with Yao Manhuai and requested the public relations department remove the photos from the internet to protect his son’s privacy.

Now three years later, in the photo, Yin Chang hadn’t changed much. While his face was remarkably unchanged, his overall presence had significantly improved. He was seen carrying a black shoulder bag and was wearing a Versace printed T-shirt with fitted jeans and ecco casual shoes. With one hand in his pocket, he was facing the camera in a slight scowl with formidable eyes.

Although Yin Chang hasn’t formally been a part of the entertainment world, he had the same aura and charisma as any other movie star.

Looking at the photo in deep thought, she heard a knock on her office door. “Please come in,” she said while turning her attention to the entrance.

“Chief Yao, Yin Chang is here……” The people who picked him up at the airport reported to Yao Manhuai.  Knowing that things went wrong at the airport, standing side-by-side the man and woman were quite self-conscious.

Yao Manhuai didn’t talk and instead, stared at Yin Chang dumbfounded. The photo only portrayed a fraction of Yin Chang natural beauty. The real person standing in front of her was exceptionally striking.

The eighteen-year-old Yin Chang wasn’t a little boy anymore. His Broad physique and tall height exuded sexiness. In close observation, his facial features were perfect and his skin was flawless. It was like the perfect work of art completed by the hand of God.

In fact, Yin Dong appearance wasn’t nearly as remarkable as his son. While Yin Dong wasn’t bad looking, his fame was due to his superb acting skills and good luck and not because of his looks.

A long time ago, Yao Manhuai remembered when Yin Dong began to live with his son, she asked him who his mother was. While he never answered her, she suspected, based on Yin Chang’s own features, the mother must have been an exceptional beauty.

Moreover, she hadn’t noticed it before, but at some angles, Yin Chang eyes looked dark-gray-blue. With his alabaster skin and chiseled features, one look from him and a person’s soul could easily be swept away….

He didn’t even do anything at the airport. With just this one occurrence, already there were countless fans. “Chief Yao?” The man interrupted Yao Manhuai’s thoughts.

Relaxing her expression, she collected her thoughts. While the timing was inappropriate, she couldn’t stop herself from thinking about Yin Chang transition to stardom.

She rose slowly and gestured to the two of them: “You may leave.”

If Yin Chang was destined to follow the path of his father, then tonight’s airport storm wasn’t a bad thing. In today’s era of social media, the person who generates the most traffic was king. All exposure on various media have a role to pay in their fame as movie stars. Yin Chang happenstance at the airport wasn’t negative and the resulting traffic that the net discussion generated for a newcomer was unheard of.

Having known him for several years, she addressed Yin Chang informally: “Chang, how many years has it been since I’ve seen you?” Yao Manhuai eyes softened and she addressed him with affection as a mother would: “I sill remember when I first met you. You were so little, but now look at you, you are so tall!”

Although they hadn’t seen each other for many years, Yao Manhuai didn’t show her age and looked exactly like Yin Chang remembered.

Yao Manhuai sighed: “I am as deeply sorry for your father’s accident, but it has already happened and I can only give you my condolences.”

It wasn’t until this moment, when his hoarse voice called, Auntie Yao, that his emotions welled up suddenly. The loss of his father was truly heartbreaking.

Chapter 225: Thank You

_________________

Although the news caused his mother some grief, ultimately, she was on Zhang Siyi’s side. Instinctively, her reaction was to help her son hide the issue for now instead joining forces with her husband to deal with him and potentially causing an irrevocable rift between them.

After his mother left, Zhang Siyi sat for a moment in relief then sent a message to Gu Yu. He told him the truth of what just had happened.

When the matter of tuition came up, Gu Yu expected some doubt and a little push-back. However, he didn’t think their relationship would be discovered so soon. In contrast, he expected it to take a few years. After all, Zhang Siyi is still young and the expectations of him when entering society weighs heavily on his shoulders. For the young adult, life can feel overwhelming. In addition, Zhang Siyi academic career was still a priority. Least of all did Gu Yu expect Zhang Siyi’s mother to link the two things together. Gu Yu had underestimated the insight of a ‘rotten mother.’

Over the phone, Gu Yu’s warm and reassuring words were comforting. Once the matter came, it was alright and no longer was an issue of lies and concealment. Now, it was time to work together and pull his Mother squarely onto their side.

Nevertheless, his mother’s immediate negative reaction was etched into Zhang Siyi’s mind. He felt guilty and couldn’t sleep all night.

The next day, with a pair of dark circles under his eyes, he went downstairs and saw his mother helping their housekeeper prepare breakfast in the kitchen. Like his own, he noticed her eyes were also swollen. She probably didn’t sleep well either.

Without knowing the underlying reason, the others present thought her haggard look was because she was unwilling to be separated from her son. Father Zhang also made a remark on the matter. Seeing his son also looking similar, he couldn’t help but shake his head in disapproval and sigh.

Sitting around the table for breakfast, they sat quietly without saying a word. Even his mother, who normally nagged Zhang Siyi and was naturally talkative, remained silent. Witnessing her attitude, it cut deep in Zhang Siyi’s heart and made him feel miserable.

Soon, Father Zhang picked up on the mood and just when he was about to rebuke them, someone came knocking on the front door!

When the housekeeper announced it was Gu Yu, Zhang Siyi nearly jumped from his chair from the shock at his sudden appearance. Why did he come over at this time! Did Gu Yu think his mother wasn’t stimulated enough? Appearing in front of his mother at this time was simply adding fuel to the fire!

Indeed, when the housekeeper announced Gu Yu, none of enthusiasm and joy of the past flashed on her face. Only surprise and panic were expressed.

As they glanced towards the entrance, they saw Gu Yu enter from the side. He was wearing a tailored silk shirt and matte black trousers. With his styled hair, the clean-cut garments accentuated his long legs and athletic build, making him look particularly striking, like a model.

With a single hand in his pants’ pocket and a pleasant smile, he extended his other naturally in humble greetings, highlighting the most proper etiquette.

Although a minute ago, Zhang Siyi was feeling rather anxious, when he felt Gu Yu’s presence, he seemed to have grown a back-bone. Feeling less worried, he suddenly relaxed.

Zhang Siyi didn’t know whether Gu Yu was born with the innate talent to charm everyone in a tense environment simply by his presence, or if his ability was something he fostered step-by-step over the years through work experience. His confidant smile and calm actions soothed everyone.

Quietly, Zhang Siyi shot a glance at his mother, fearing the worst. To his surprise, he saw a noticeable change in her demeanor. Even with her previous resistance and her personal struggle, she could not hide her appreciation of the young man in front on her.

Zhang Siyi’s Father, who knows nothing about the truth, naturally welcomed Gu Yu. Now that he has learned about Gu Yu’s proposal to fund Zhang Siyi’s tuition yesterday, he regarded Gu Yu as a nobleman. Enthusiastically he warmly invited: “Gu Yu, you are here so early. Did you eat breakfast yet? Come and Sit.”

Gu Yu: “I have eaten, thank you. Please take your time to finish your breakfast. I will go to the living room to sit for a while. I have something I need to discuss with Zhang Siyi about.”

Father Zhang: “What’s so pressing that you need to come here in person to talk? For anything urgent, you should let him come to you. Don’t spoil him too much.”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

Gu Yu laughed and said: “It’s a matter of his visa. I happen to be out on an errand close to here so dropping by wasn’t out of my way.”

Zhang father nodded and turned to address Zhang Siyi a glance: “Well then, you eat quickly. Don’t let our guest wait.”

With another three mouthfuls, Zhang Siyi finished eating and got up. While walking towards the living room, Zhang Siyi’s mother watched him like a hawk.

The housekeeper gave Gu Yu a cup of tea and when she moved away, Zhang Siyi whispered to him: “What are you doing here! What are you going to talk about?”

Gu Yu raised his eyebrows and lowered his voice:  “Don’t we need your family registry and property certificate to get a visa? Since your mother knows about us, I thought there might be some hesitation and possibly, she wouldn’t give it to you. I came here to help and add a little pressure.”

Zhang Siyi: “…”  Fuck, I totally forgot about that!

While his parents were still eating, Gu Yu comforted Zhang Siyi with reassurances: “Don’t worry, it’ll be okay.”

Zhang Siyi lowered his eyes: “I’m not worried.”

Wanting to offer comfort, Gu Yu raised his hand to gently rub his cheek and said: “How can you say that when you have such dark circles under your eyes. Didn’t you get any sleep last night?”

Zhang Siyi jerked away to dodge his hand: “Hey…”

Although he dropped his hand, his look of tenderness lingered. A look that couldn’t be mistaken for anything but love and concern.

Mother Zhang came out of the kitchen holding a plate of fruit. As she walked towards the living room, she saw them whispering to each other. When she noticed their tender interactions, she could feel her heart thumping in her chest. Staring at them, it took awhile for the two men to notice and react.

Zhang Siyi “…”

 Gu Yu: “…”

After she put down the fruit, she turned to go. Seeing that she would leave without saying a word, Gu Yu quickly signaled to Zhang Siyi with a wink and a quick nod.

Biting the bullet, Zhang Siyi stopped her by calling out: “Mom….”

His mother turned around and said: “What?”

Zhang Siyi bowed his head and quietly said: “Well, I’m going to get a visa in a few days so I need the family registry and a copy of the property certificate….”

Mother Zhang: “…”

In order to issue a Visa, both documents are necessary. Since Zhang Siyi and Gu Yu neither have a direct family relationship nor are they husband and wife, Gu Yu must deposit money in his bank as proof of assets. However, with the large amount of money combined with the short period needed to pay before going to school in less than six months, there was a risk that the deposit could be rejected. Zhang Siyi can only provide proof of identity and property related to his parents as a reasonable guarantee.

However, “The Family Registry”. These three words are difficult for Zhang Siyi to speak of. He knows that the family registry is needed to registrar a marriage. Now that his relationship is known, it appears like Zhang Siyi was running away to elope!  (=_=)

Thoughts jumbled; Mother Zhang stared at them for a long time. Watching the two younger men look at her pitifully, like two begging puppies, her heart was both sour and soft.

Finally, she sighed and turned around, walked to a drawer, took something out, and gave it to Zhang Siyi. Since she hadn’t given him a clear opinion about his relationship, her silence was her way protesting.

Just before she turned away for the second time, Gu Yu suddenly held Zhang Siyi’s hand in front of her.

Zhang Siyi was frightened and impulsively jerked his hand away but instead, it was held tightly by Gu Yu.

Gu Yu looked earnestly at his mother and sincerely said: “Auntie, thank you.”

Mother Zhang: “…” Thank you for your thanks! Who allowed you to be together! I’m just providing a copy!

Knowing Father Zhang was still at home and could come over here at any time, made her feel very anxious. She was very eager to separate their clasped hands. However, Gu Yu was even quicker than her. When she approached, he let go of Zhang Siyi and at the same time, moved over to create an open space for her to sit. Then, he reached up to pull her down onto the sofa.

“Auntie…” Gu Yu looked at her imploringly and earnestly stated: “I will not take Zhang Siyi away from you. He is still your son. I just like him and want to love him as much as you do.”

Zhang Siyi: “…” Good, so nauseating!

In her heart, Mother Zhang’s felt like she experienced all the flavors of Chinese five-spice. With red and swollen eyes, she asked: “How long have you known each other? Now and for the rest of your life, can you afford it? Your status is so much better than our family’s. Zhang Siyi is so young. Perhaps, he hadn’t thought about the future so clearly and on an impulse…..”

Zhang Siyi rebuked: “Mom! “

He wanted to say that it was not like that, but Zhang Siyi’s Mother ferociously snapped: “You shut up, don’t talk!” “

Zhang Siyi: “…”

As Zhang Siyi’s mother collected her thoughts, she looked to Gu Yu and said: “Zhang Siyi is my son. Only his Mother knows who he really is. Only his parents know how many shortcomings he really has and only we are able to put up with them. No matter what lifetime promise you give me now, I won’t believe in it. I don’t want to be the bad mother who ends your relationship because if that happened, Zhang Siyi would hate me. If you want my blessing now, to be honest, it’s not possible.”

Chapter 224: Funding

____________________

Zhang Siyi thought about the various reactions his parents would have. Would they blame him for being too hasty? Would they be proud of him? Would they ask him about his previous declaration of being financially independent? Least of all, he never expected their first reaction was to worry about the lack of tuition.

The heartfelt love he felt from his parent’s in order to satisfy his dreams moved Zhang Siyi.

Especially from Zhang Siyi’s father. Not only did his Father not scold or ridicule Zhang Siyi, he was also anxious about the funding. Feeling worried, he anxiously asked Mother Zhang: “What about our wealth management fund? Can we make withdraw money now?”

Mother Zhang smacked his thigh: “We’ve only deposited money into it a few times over the year. I don’t even know if we can take it out in advance! I’ll have to go to the bank tomorrow and ask!”

Quickly, Zhang Siyi explained: “Mom, Dad. You don’t need to worry about the money. It will be taken care of.”

Both Father and Mother Zhang turned to look at him and asked: “Who is taking care of it?”

Zhang Siyi honestly confessed: “Gu Yu.”

His parent’s reactions were vastly different. Father Zhang only furrowed his brows. In contrast, several expressions flashed across Zhang Siyi’s Mother’s face.

She wondered: “Why is he paying for your tuition?”

Zhang Siyi told his parents the excuse he concocted with Gu Yu: “Gu Yu said he wanted to invest in talent. After going abroad, he is planning on forming a new company and I will have to work for him for many years.”

Since the explanation was quite reasonable, Zhang Siyi’s Father and Mother couldn’t find any faults. His Mother thought it over then asked: “Isn’t Gu Yu a registered architect already? He is  design director so why is he going too?”

Zhang Siyi: “Learning is a never-ending endeavor, isn’t it?  I’ve told you before, in order to broadened their scope of knowledge, many people from different sects of the industry partake in the specialized courses.

After hearing Zhang Siyi’s explanation, Father Zhang nodded in agreement. He felt relieved and said: “Young Gu is very reliable. It would be very good to go with him.”

Mother Zhang is not as stupid as Father Zhang. As a rotten girl, her sensitive nerves have begun to move, and she felt deep down that something wasn’t right.

While eating dinner, Zhang Mother spoke: “Sisi, I’ve been thinking, asking others to pay tuition fees isn’t right. We aren’t short on money. We will be able to get by. Why should someone else pay for you? Tell Gu Yu that you will study together, but we will pay for your expenses.”

Upon hearing his Mother’s statement, Zhang Siyi hesitated. When he heard his father say, “Isn’t it good for Young Gu to invest in him?” , he nearly choked.

Zhang Siyi followed suit: “Since you are about to retire, you should keep your money and spend it yourself. In case of hospitalization, or other health concerns, you will have need of the money.”

Zhang Siyi’s Mother glared at her son: “What do you think is wrong with us? We are in perfect health!”

Zhang Siyi didn’t want to fight: “Fine, don’t use it for your medical care. Use it for something else. Haven’t you always wanted to visit other countries? With that amount, you can travel around the world and buy whatever you want. Isn’t that good?”

During New Years, when his parents came home from their trip, he noticed how happy they seemed to be. At twenty-four, he didn’t want to burden his parents any more than necessary. A robust economic foundation would greatly improve their quality of life because, instead of sacrificing their needs for the sake of tuition for their son, they could use the money for themselves.

Mother Zhang: “But …”

Zhang Siyi interrupted her: “Don’t worry. I’ve already told you I won’t spend your money after my undergraduate graduation so I’ll take care of it myself. Oh, and you don’t need to bother me about a newlywed’s home. I’ll buy one myself.”

Faced with such a mature response from their son, Zhang Siyi’s parents had mixed feelings.

His Father stated: “We aren’t unwilling to help you financially. You are our only child so isn’t all our money yours anyway? At first we went along with your determination because we didn’t want you relying on us for every single one of your problems otherwise, you would never grow up. You are an adult now and during the past two years, Dad is so please at how much you have matured. If you have made arrangements with Gu Yu, then I will respect your decision.”

Mother Zhang suddenly said: “Since when have you two ever gotten along so easily? Gu Yu’s investment in your son is not a small sum, but millions. Why don’t you think this may be some sort of bribery? What if it comes back to hurt you?”

In the past, Zhang Siyi’s mother was the one who was always talking positively about Gu Yu. In stark contrast, now she was the one who was acting suspicious.

Zhang Siyi wanted to refute, but his father spoke first: “The last time we spoke of this, you reminded me, Gu Yu is the son of the chief engineer that I’ve known for ten years. For so many years, half of Ningcheng’s large and small municipal projects were approved by me. I can think of ten of them off-hand for which Senior Gu participated in. In all that time, did he ever do something suspicious and mix business with his personal matters? Today, I ’m going to backup Zhang Siyi. I might not understand Gu Yu’s decision, but that is Gu Mingfeng’s son. I knew at a glance that he and his father are hard-working, down-to-earth people. You can rest assured. Even if I think it might be wrong, Zhang Siyi has grown so much following his guidance during the past two years that I’m very willing to let him go.”

Mother Zhang: “…”

After listening to his father’s remarks, Zhang Siyi’s view of his father changed. He always thought he and his mother were on one side and his father on another. However, in the key moment, the head of house was still the law!

After chewing on his food for a while, Father Zhang said: “Young people have a way of working with one another. Gu Yu’s investment in Zhang Siyi is not a blind investment. Didn’t he say that Zhang Siyi will have to work for him for a few years after graduation? Being sought out to start a business, doesn’t it prove how valuable our son is? In addition, knowing his finances and job security are settled, our son will be better able to concentrate on studying.”

The more Father Zhang spoke, the more he felt like the arrangement was the best outcome for Zhang Siyi. He added: “Anyway, I think it’s a good idea.”

Mother Zhang was speechless. As the alarm bells were ringing in her head, she was very anxious. Old Zhang… There are so many things you don’t understand! You are selling your first born!

Zhang father did not care about his wife’s worries. Ignoring the protest in Mother Zhang’s eyes, he continued to ask Zhang Siyi: “With his salary, how does Gu Yu have so much money to spend to go abroad?”

Zhang Siyi quickly explained to his parents about origins of the properties he owns and concluded: ”Gu Yu has enough liquidity on hand for us to go abroad. He collects rent worth more than my salary for the two properties in the capital. He isn’t afraid of being idle and eating himself out of house and home.”

As a look of melancholy enveloped Father Zhang’s features, he sighed and said: “Compared to other people in their thirties, Gu Yu is quite capable, is he not? I saw an article that our old neighbor posted online yesterday that said, one of the greatest blessings of going into society is having a good leader to follow. Matching the right tie, the fate of a young man’s life could be changed. I think that’s right to say, our son found the right leader to follow!”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

Mother Zhang: “…”

When his father was finished, Zhang Siyi and his mother’s eyes suddenly met. When he saw the turbulence in his Mother’s eyes, Zhang Siyi looked down quickly to avoid her stare. Hiding his guilty conscience, he picked up some more rice and quietly ate his dinner.

However, he was unable to escape from her notice long. That night before going to sleep, Mother Zhang came knocking on his door

At that time, Zhang Siyi was lying on the bed, making a video call with Gu Yu. As they flirted and exchanged loving words, they heard a knock of the door. He quickly said goodbye and ended the call.

Mother Zhang pushed in the door and smiled: “Who are you talking to that is making you so happy? I can hear you through the door.”

Not knowing how much his mother overheard him talking while she was at the door, Zhang Siyi expression was stiff: “No one in particular….  just a friend.”

Zhang Siyi’s mother didn’t enquire about it further. Walking over to him, she sat down on the bed and asked Zhang Siyi about what his plans were; when he needed his visa and when he was officially going abroad.

As he relayed some of his plans, his mother frowned: “You aren’t coming back home before leaving?”

Zhang Siyi’s conscience was starting to weigh on him and didn’t want to upset his mother: “I’m staying in Haicheng because I have to stay at work until the end of July. I have to pack and leave in August so there isn’t time for me to come back home.”

His mother’s expression was somewhat bleak. She had a nagging feeling like Zhang Siyi’s was hiding something, but at the same time, feeling guilty for thinking so.

Zhang Siyi tried to comfort her: “We will come back for Christmas. You and Dad can come to England to visit….”

As he was talking, Mother Zhang suddenly interrupted him: “Sisi, you can tell me the truth. Why is Gu Yu paying for your tuition? Why would he pay for someone who isn’t the best in the company? Its not that I think you aren’t good enough. I understand if you were with Gu Yao, but you said she has a boyfriend…………  Are you…? Are you and Gu Yu…..”

Stopping abruptly, Zhang Siyi’s mother didn’t dare say more.

Only then did she carefully reflect on all of their interactions, from last year until now and linked many things together. From them living together, to his visit to the Gu residence for Chinese New Year and especially afterwards. Both when Zhang Siyi described his ideal person and Gu Yu’s behavior in the car when they drove off. Finally, Zhang Siyi said he will go abroad together……

Now enlightened, she wanted it to be a product of her own imagination, influenced from reading too many books. However, with so many obvious signs when one payed attention, she couldn’t ignore it anymore. The relationship between her son and Gu Yu wasn’t so simple. How could she not ask?

Grabbing Zhang Siyi’s hand and holding it tightly, she stared in question at her son for to the truth and she saw it.

Zhang Siyi was never good at lying and his ashen white face made it obvious. His mother’s question immediately exposed the truth of the matter despite Zhang Siyi’s unclear reply: “Him and I, what are you saying?”

Mother Zhang didn’t have to ask anymore to understand everything. Her son, she knew best. If it weren’t so, Zhang Siyi would have exploded and become angry. Never would he have had such a guilty reaction.

With a deep sense of guilt, her heart sank and her mind was filled with an incredible sense of turmoil. How could this be? Did the books she hid in her son’s room affected him?

In attempt to dissuade her, Zhang Siyi continued to lie: “Don’t worry about it. You must be reading too many novels.”

Enraged, Mother Zhang opened the closet doors roughly, while she began to shed tears, she pulled out a book and started tearing it up. Frightened by his mother’s rash actions, he got up and pulling on her arm in attempts to stop her, he shouted: “What are you doing?! Mom stop!”

With tears at the corner of her eyes, Zhang Siyi’s Mother accused herself and whispered: “It’s my fault…… I did this to you…… Mother has hurt you….”

Zhang Siyi was shocked. He held his mother and stopped pretending. He blurted out: “Mom, it has nothing to do with you!”

Her hands trembled: “So, so you are really…..”

“Umm…” What else can Zhang Siyi say? Before, having witness her taste in books, he thought his Mother was stupid for not noticing it on her own. Now that the storm has come, he found he was surprisingly, ready to bear it.

Afraid his Mother would think less of Gu Yu, Zhang Siyi’s first reaction was to shield him: “I liked him first and confessed to Gu Yu first. Mother, please don’t blame him.”

In his parent’s eyes, he hoped that Gu Yu would still shine and he would be the one tarnished.

As his mother covered her face, her shoulders shook with uncontrollable sobs. God, how would she be able to explain this to Old Zhang!

Zhang Siyi gathered his mother’s torn book and put it back in the closet. Watching his mother still crying, he felt bad and said: “Mom, don’t be like this. I, I’m very happy with him. He is very good to me, especially good. We work hard together, we struggle together, we enjoy life together.… just, we can’t get married. I’m sorry Mom. I really like him, but I didn’t know how to tell you….” Now that he finished speaking, tears also welled up in Zhang Siyi’s eyes.

Mother Zhang trembled. She liked to believe in the notion that love can transcend all, but that was just in a novel. In reality, her heart wasn’t willing to accept it.

As they sat together on the bed sobbing, they heard a knock on the door and Father Zhang’s voice: “What are you two doing in there?” In the next second, he opened the door and came inside.

Scared to death, he looked to his mother. For more then twenty years, he and his mother had a tactical understanding of each other and thus, believed his mother knew what should and shouldn’t be said.

Witnessing both his wife and son together with red puffy eyes, Zhang Siyi’s father frowned: “So, you didn’t weep in the middle of the night when he left to study abroad previously, but now when he tells you he is leaving, you cry?”

Mother Zhang tilted her head and scoffed softly. Zhang Father couldn’t stop himself from lamenting: “He isn’t gone forever. He is just going out of the country! Why do mothers have such thin skin!”

Mother Zhang: “…”

Father Zhang turned his attention to Zhang Siyi and said: “You too. If your mother cries, then you cry? What are you, a little girl?”

Zhang Siyi: “…”

Father Zhang coughed softly: “It’s OK. Don’t be so emotional and just let it go. Now, hurry up and get to sleep.” After speaking, he abruptly turned around and went downstairs.

Damp from breaking out in a cold sweat, Zhang Siyi slowly exhaled the breath he inadvertently was holding. He looked pitifully at his mother and was about to ask her to keep quiet about it, but before he had the chance to speak, his mother wiped her tears away and said: “Listen. You mustn’t tell you father. Otherwise, he will have a stroke!”
