Zhang Siyi least expected Gu Yu to ask Tai Fei to keep an eye on Bai Rui on his behalf. It proved how concerned Gu Yu was and how much he didn’t want Bai Rui to affect Zhang Siyi, right?

Heart warmed at the thought, Zhang Siyi asked Tao Fei directly in front of Bai Rui: “So what did you find out? What the hell was he up to?”

Spearing a piece of fruit from the appetizer that the waiter had just brought and putting in his mouth, Tao Fei chewed for a few second before replying: “I felt like he was just bored so he was being a pain in the ass!”

The corner of Zhang Siyi’s mouth twitched. He was bored? And that’s why he used so many tricks to attract his attention?

Smiling, Bai Rui stood up and extended a hand to Gu Yu: “A month around, finally I get to meet the man behind the messages. Director Gu really played a good hand.”

Smirking, Gu Yu chuckled softly.

Over the course of the meal, recounting the events of the past month, the four of them laughed over all the posturing and jokes.”

Indeed, Bai Rui originally wanted to test Zhang Siyi. When he saw Zhang Siyi’s comfort and familiarity around Tao Fei, he assumed Tao Fei was his boyfriend.”

As for the reason of moving upstairs, it was purely coincidental. At the time, Bai Rui’s company was looking for office space. While he was waiting to give Zhang Siyi the cake, he noticed the sign for rental space available. He investigated the surrounding area and liked the location. Even better, the office space happened to be both suitable and very affordable.

Regardless, Zhang Siyi had to admit how cultured Bai Rui really was. Even after his treatment, he maintained a calm dementor and didn’t show anger. He even laughed at his own folly from time to time. If a normal person fell into such an awkward situation, they would have likely blown up.

With a graduate degree in the art field and financial independence, like peas in a pod, they came from the same mold of person. Together, the four of them had an exceptionally pleasant meal.

Afterwards, Bai Rui settled the bill. With Tao Fei and Bai Rui walking ahead of Zhang Siyi and Gu Yu, they walked back to the building together. While walking, Zhang Siyi heard Bai Rui ask Tao Fei whether or not he wanted to go to a modern art exhibition held by a friend in his art circle this weekend.

Tao Fei naturally looked back at them and asked: “Do you want to go?”

Since Zhang Siyi’s application for a Master’s degree in England was due in December, he was urgently preparing his materials and didn’t have spare time to hang out. With his valid excuse, he declined. Since he couldn’t go, Gu Yu wouldn’t go either.

All was quiet and Zhang Siyi sighed with regret. The big trouble that was brewing was easily squashed by the great demon.

With only twenty days left to apply, he was inundated with work and couldn’t relax. Since Zhang Siyi had to add an extra shift, as the deadline for the renovation bid was approaching, he wasn’t coming home until eight at night. Then, he had to prepare the information and portfolio for his application. As a result, he was only getting about four hours of sleep at night.

The weight on his shoulders felt heavier than it was when he was taking the college entrance exam, the foreign language exam, and even his final undergraduate project presentation. Zhang Siyi experienced an unprecedented period of stress and suffering.

The only good thing was that Gu Yu was beside him, not only as his Boss, but as his boyfriend. Since Gu Yu was an independent architect with a license, he was able to help Zhang Siyi choose appropriate works for his portfolio as well as write a letter of recommendation without reservations.

In this process, Zhang Siyi experienced the pleasure of working together with a boyfriend, step by step, to move forward in life and ultimately was reminded of Yu Rui.

Naturally, they weren’t the same. At least Zhang Siyi’s portfolio contained all of his own creations and the letter of recommendation that Gu Yu wrote was entirely based on his own ability. Including the necessary prerequisites, the realistic facts were clear. There were no exaggerations.

With the strict admission rules of British institutions for RIBA part 2, a person would be a fool to exaggerate their ability. If one proceeded, their inability to fish in troubles waters would reveal the truth of the matter and a persons’ reputation would be immediately ruined with the possibility of expulsion. That is why the alternate route of a one-year degree program, with different admission requirements, isn’t as prestigious.

Zhang Siyi had remarkable growth this past year and a half working at Borderless. He thought that as long as he properly organized the materials for the application, getting into one of the top universities was in the bag.

However, in the process of getting his portfolio together, Zhang Siyi encountered an unexpected problem. Since he wanted to apply to the top Universities, he needed to cater to what was important for international applicants and pay special attention to the design phase of a plan. Although he was involved in many projects, some contributions were only the drawing phase, while others were domestic plans that weren’t suitable for England’s aesthetics. The most problematic issue was the fact that he lacked depth.

Reviewing his completed projects for an entire day, he decided his style, which represented his thought process while designing, wasn’t well represented by the limited options he had. Pondering the situation, Zhang Siyi ultimately decided that he didn’t have enough time to create more for his portfolio.

After discussing the issue with Gu Yu,  Gu Yu suggested writing a personal statement to accompany the work that would explain in detail his design process behind each of them.

Writing essays was one of Zhang Siyi’s weaknesses during his undergraduate years. Under Gu Yu’s guidance, now that he has read many architectural books in Gu Yu’s library, Zhang Siyi has thoroughly studied various design concepts and theories. While he was able to put the newly found research into practice, putting his own design idea into words down on paper continued to be a struggle.

Suffering under the stress of needing to write an essay, Zhang Siyi felt a little panicky. Thinking about it more, Su Yuan came to mind. Since she was a veteran at writing articles, wouldn’t it be best to ask her for advice?

As thanks for Zhang Siyi’s help with her job before, Su Yuan had invited Zhang Siyi out to dinner many times. However, because he was away on a business trip, he didn’t have the opportunity to meet. Now that Zhang Siyi also needed her help, it was a good time to call and meet up with her.

As mentioned in the original job description, Liang Xueying’s firm was small. Not only was there no need for overtime, the working atmosphere was peaceful. The harmony between colleagues and their boss was a whole fully different experience as compared to the environment of the previous office.

After settling into her new position, Su Yuan took the initiative to contact the editor of the magazines that Gu Yu recommended. Due to Gu Yu’s recommendation, even those magazines gave her translation jobs without reservations.

Now that she has been in the new company for the past month, her life has changed completely. With her reliable personality and good temperament, she often accompanied Liang Xueying to meet with customers outside of the office. Even though she worked at home at translating articles, she still had time to socialize and go out shopping with friends. The changes in Su Yuan were very evident and the happiness she exuded was contagious.

“I sometimes regret, why I didn’t leave the company earlier. The mistreatment was obvious and yet I dragged my feet day after day…..” Su Yuan blamed herself and shook her head. She looked up at Zhang Siyi and Gu Yu with gratitude: “But thanks to you, I may never have had the chance to change my life for the better.”

Gu Yu: “Mr. Liang also called me a while ago and said that you are a hardworking and motivated employee with the ability to grow and learn. He also thanked me for recommending such an excellent candidate to him.”

Su Yuan looked very happy and a little embarrassed.

Nodding at Su Yuan, Zhang Siyi breathed a sigh of relief. After taking the time to savor their food, Zhang Siyi thought of Ren Mengxuan and asked: “How’s Ren Mengxuan these days?”

“Let’s go home.” Gu Yu waved down a taxi, urged Zhang Siyi into the car and commented. “Your friend with the nickname Heartless Han told you to kill my cactus?”

Zhang Siyi: “It was just a joke.. I wouldn’t dare!”

Since Gu Yu remained quiet, Zhang Siyi didn’t think much more of it until they arrived at home.

Unexpectedly when they walked inside, Townhouse whizzed by Gu Yu and sat in front of Zhang Siyi, wagging his tail and begging for food.

Gu Yu admonished Zhang Siyi coldly: “You aren’t allowed to feed his son tonight.”

Since He Chengtian was a man, a few rumors about him weren’t a big deal. However, as a young woman, it could damage Gu Yao reputation and innocence.

Zhang Siyi asked Gu Yao anxiously, “Well, are you okay with the gossip?”

Laughing, He Chengtian happily replied: “Brother Siyi, I have to thank you!”

Zhang Siyi: “…” Hearing He Chengtian mischief-making antics, Zhang Siyi rubbed his temples and sighed. Did he send Gu Yao from one tiger to another? (= _ =)

Zhang Siyi took a deep breath then said: “Brother, stop joking. It hasn’t even been a month and you have only met once before. Are you sure you want to marry her?”

After listening to Liao Jun’s feelings about his separation from his boyfriend, the phrase ‘cherish him while you are together’ was firmly imprinted on Zhang Siyi’s mind.

It wasn’t like he was particularly in the mood tonight, but when he thought of the separation in the days to come, in order to make up for the emptiness in the future, he couldn’t wait to be with Gu Yu at every moment of the day.

Gu Yu questioned: “What’s wrong with you? Who was the one that complained to me about our frequency not long ago? We did it every day for the past two nights in X city. Wasn’t it enough?”

“What’s going on?” Zhang Siyi asked.

Smiling, Bai Rui looked at Zhang Siyi and said: “I heard it from your boyfriend. Were you recently on a business trip?”

Zhang Siyi raised his eyebrows and said nothing.

Turning his head, Bai Rui took another look at Tao Fei then back at Zhang Siyi. As if stoking a fire, Bai Rui said: “While you were away, I was out with your boyfriend every day. Aren’t you jealous?”

The corners of Zhang Siyi’s eyes twitched frantically. ….. Wait, did Bai Rui think that, … Tao Fei was his boyfriend?  Shit!  Tao Fei really did it !

Looking at Tao Fei, Zhang Siyi saw him trying hard to stifle a laugh then he calmly winked at him. Zhang Siyi almost broke down and laughed out loud.

“Huh? Why would I be jealous?”  ….. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! I’m going to be jealous, nonsense! Tao Fei wasn’t his boyfriend.

When Bai Rui saw Zhang Siyi’s reaction, his expression was strange for a moment. However, Bai Rui didn’t suspect anything strange.

The three of them went to a Cantonese restaurant near the company. After being directed to a table, Zhang Siyi and Tao Fei sat side-by-side then purposely talked enthusiastically about the events of the business trip.

Wanting to sooth his anxiety, as if Zhang Siyi was departing the next day, Gu Yu desperately held Zhang Siyi’s waist with one arm and the back of his head with the other. Fiercely kissing him, biting Zhang Siyi’s lips and sucking on the tip of his tongue, Gu Yu squeezed Zhang Siyi tightly in his embrace, not allowing him any chance of escape.

Yes. They have been together for less than a year. How was it possible to trust a person that much? Wasn’t he afraid of that Zhang Siyi would run away with his money? Zhang Siyi: “Honey….”

Pretending to be rough, Gu Yu grabbed Zhang Siyi’s legs and raised them while maneuvering his own hips closer. Zhang Siyi quickly changed his tune and squealed: “Husband!”

Smiling, Gu Yu laughed: “Good!”

When they finished their bed play, it was nine o’clock at night and Gu Yu had mentioned not having had dinner yet. Zhang Siyi quickly sat up: “Why didn’t you say so before? Let’s go eat!”

Even late the evening, the night market in the ancient city was open. Zhang Siyi dragged Gu Yu around the streets to find a barbeque place to eat at. In a livelier area, they sat down at a vendor and ordered a bunch of dishes to eat and two cups of sake to drink. While eating their meal, they continued their conversation about applying for a Master’s program.

Gu Yu wanted to know if Zhang Siyi had any specific programs he was going to apply to and what the time frame was for the application. When he heard Zhang Siyi say that he would go abroad next September if admitted, Gu Yu fell into silence.

Afraid of making Gu Yu upset, Zhang Siyi looked up at him and earnestly promised: “I’ll come back as soon as I graduate and during holidays we can visit….”

As Gu Yu nodded, Zhang Siyi could see his handsome features in the dimly lit area. Although he was smiling, he didn’t appear happy. Instead, he seemed lonely and distressed.

Zhang Siyi wanted to change the topic: “I’m going back to Haicheng the day after tomorrow. Why did you come today?”

Gu Yu glanced at him and in a calm, small voice he said: “I missed you.”

Zhang Siyi heart was beating like crazy. Even though it was only a few days of separation, Gu Yu purchased a direct flight, overnight to come see Zhang Siyi! Thinking along those lines, Zhang Siyi could imagine Gu Yu buying airline tickets every weekend to England while Zhang Siyi was abroad. Does he have that much money to burn? Actually, since they weren’t relatives, Zhang Siyi wasn’t sure it was possible to obtain a travel visa and therefore, without being married, Gu Yu wouldn’t be able to go at all. The only thing Zhang Siyi could do was wait until he returned to China. Thinking about it was depressing.

After eating barbeque, Zhang Siyi reluctantly returned to his room. When he arrived, Liao Jun was still awake on his bed, laying on his side and talking on his phone. As Zhang Siyi walked into the room, Liao Jun lowered his voice and abruptly said: “My roommate is back.” Listening to him momentarily, Zhang Siyi could tell he must be on the phone with his girlfriend. Trying not to disturb his phone call, Zhang Siyi went into the bathroom to wash his face and brush his teeth. When he came out, Liao Jun hung up the phone.

Zhang Siyi smiled and casually asked: “Was that your girlfriend? You must have a great relationship since you call every day.”

Liao Jun’s expression changed slightly and he hummed a reply.

Zhang Siyi climbed into bed and asked: “Is she abroad? I accidentally overheard you that morning when you said ‘good night’ so I assumed the person was abroad.”

Liao Jun said: “You didn’t guess wrong.”

Zhang Siyi: “Which country is she in?”

Liao Jun: “United States.”

Zhang Siyi: “Wow! Is she in the same profession as us?  What is she studying?”

Liao Jun: “Humanities and the history of architecture.”

Zhang Siyi was surprised: “That’s amazing! Is she older than you? If you are in a Master’s program does that mean she is getting her doctorate?”

Liao Jun didn’t give Zhang Siyi an answer. Since Zhang Siyi thought he didn’t want to talk about his private affairs anymore, he stayed quiet. Not wanting to upset his roommate, he was about to change the subject, but Liao Jun suddenly looked up at him, interrupting Zhang Siyi. He said: ”We are like you.”

Zhang Siyi didn’t react. What is the same?

Liao Jun tilted his head in the direction of the door and stated: “That guy who just came for you… the director of your company, isn’t he your boyfriend?”

Startled, Zhang Siyi bolted up straight and blurted: “How did you know?”  Upon further thought, Zhang Siyi calmed down to reflect on his words and realized Liao Jun only said ‘the same’, he didn’t say anything more than that. They were very careful. How was it possible to have exposed their relationship?

Liao Jun explained: “I went out for a walk on the first night. I happen to see him pull you aside roughly into an alley, so I was worried he was going to fight with you. As a result, I looked passed the ally and saw him kiss you.”

Liao Jun answered all his questions: “Well, we were classmates before. While I went to work after graduation, he was in a master’s degree program for a year then applied to Rice University’s doctorate in Architecture program. He left China in August.”

Zhang Siyi: “Will he come back after graduation?”

Liao Jun: “That’s the plan.”

Recalling his own plans, Zhang Siyi figured Liao Jun was experiencing the separation that he and Gu Yu would have to go through. He was curious and wanted to know how Liao Jun felt: “It hasn’t been half a year yet. How can you stand it?”

Liao Jun lowered his eyes and honestly replied: “The first two months were very difficult. Since we used to see each other almost every day, as soon as he left, I felt completely empty, like half of my soul was gone. During restless nights, in order to fall back asleep, I would have to call him to hear his voice.”

At the thought of experiencing the same heartache, Zhang Siyi fretted in worry: “How are you now?”

Liao Jun smiled: “I’m accustomed to it so its fine.”

As the truth of the matter in Zhang Siyi’s future was laid bare in front of him, for a long time, Zhang Siyi didn’t say anything.

Liao Jun noticed that something was wrong with him and asked: “What’s wrong?”

Bitterly, Zhang Siyi spoke: “Because I also plan to go abroad next year while he will stay in China. But after listening to you,  I don’t know what to do.”

Liao Jun glanced at him and quietly said: “Then it will be very hard. For someone to fly back overnight to see you again…. He must love you very much.”

Zhang Siyi got out of the bed and put on a pair of pajama pants. He gathered the rest of his clothes and left the room in a hurry. Liao Jun looked at Zhang Siyi’s disappearing back and shook his head with a smile.

In the early morning of the next day, Zhang Siyi who had served the gold master all night, stepped into the hallway stretching his sore back and bumped into Bi Lele again.

Bi Lele froze: “Did you change rooms?”

As she spoke, she saw Gu Yu come out of the room. She suddenly covered her mouth in surprise with an indescribable expression on her face.

Zhang Siyi felt somewhat panicked, but Gu Yu on the contrary was surprisingly calm. He said he was there to inspect the work and bring them back to Haicheng.

Bi Lele turned away after listening to Gu Yu’s explanation. It took her great effort to keep a straight face.

Gu Yu accompanied them on their day off to visit the city as a tourist. In the evening, they packed up their luggage and flew back to Haicheng the following day.

Finally, after half a month, they returned home to Yuanshan Garden.  When Zhang Siyi walked through the door, Townhouse pounced on him in greeting. Due to the physical work all week at the survey site and combined with traveling all day by plane, Zhang Siyi felt completely exhausted.

He made up for his lack of sleep all afternoon. In the evening, Gu Yao came home from work and saw Zhang Siyi’s unpacked luggage. She called out: “Second brother, are you back?”

Zhang Siyi called down stairs and said: “Where is He Chengtian? Is he still dropping you off?”

Gu Yao: “Well, he just left.”

Walking down the stairs, Zhang Siyi joked: “What, really? It’s been more than half a month, right? Is he still picking you up and dropping you off?”

Gu Yao’s cheeks were red. “Well the harassment has stopped, but it’s complicated.”
